Breaking Dawn Cover Revealed!
Posted by Chris | Categories: Books

Here it is everyone! The cover features a white queen with a red pawn behind it. What could this mean? You can discuss it on the message boards here.

I like the cover! The pieces even reflect on the board =D

by AliceCullen08 on May 30, 2008

This is my favorite cover of the 4. I love it! It has great meaning behind it!!

by Alaina(: on May 30, 2008

I like the cover, but I liked other ones more…. I think it wasn’t the best cover, but I still like it! Anything to do with Twilight and the movie I’m okay with! And I like how the chess pieces show many thing about Twilight ;)
Peace out!(:

by Aria on May 30, 2008

wow… this sort of looks like a fanmade one. i know it’s real, but still… I sort of like the other three better >.>

by Lauren on May 30, 2008

I don’t like how it is not similar to the previous three covers. the first three were very simplistic, and this is not very simplistic. theres the checkered pattern, which really creates a lot of “busyness” going on, and then the two chess pieces.

i really wonder what it means, and i really wonder if SM had any say in it!

by Chris on May 30, 2008

@Lauren

Actually she said she had a big part in designing the cover.. I was there when she said it in San Diego =D

by Brown_Eyed_Honey_Bee on May 30, 2008

It’s okay. I’m kinda disappointed though. :/ It’s different than the other three covers, which I absolutely adored. After all, it was the cover of Twilight that first lead me to pick it up. This one’s just…too busy, too intricate. I mean, it’s okay, I just liked the others better and wish this cover would’ve been simple like the others. But still, woot for Breaking Dawn! :)

by Sweet_Tangerine50 on May 30, 2008

I was a bit skeptical when I first heard “game board”. Because it didn’t fit in with the…”elegance” of the first 3 covers.

But it’s definitely grown on me.
A lot.

And I think this novel’s going to just blow us all away.

:D

by Silly on May 30, 2008

crazy awesumness!

by Edward_Dazzles_Me_Frequently on May 30, 2008

I love this cover. I think it is the best of all four covers.

by Samantha on May 30, 2008

I agree with what a lot of you are saying… it’s just too intricate and busy. It’s like not on the same zen level as the over covers.

by Danielle on May 30, 2008

I kind of like this one, and yet I don’t. I like the simplicity of the other three and how they kind of all ‘match’, if you get what I mean. But at the same time, maybe the busy-ness of this one means there’s a lot more going on in BD than we originally thought. Like, maybe more than one or two plot lines like usual.

by LJean on May 31, 2008

I’m not real crazy about this cover, but, could it mean, the queen is Bella, but the red pawn represents someone from the other side still learking in the background still wanting to get Bella- could the pawn represent Jacob???? Hmmmmm . . . . .

by Elliot on May 31, 2008

My thoughts:
The pawn is one of the “weaker” figures in chess, where as the queen is “strongest”. Who is the pawn and who is the queen? Why is the pawn red and not white or black?

Then there is the “Bauernopfer” (in german) where you sacrifice your pawn to do a bigger move/win the game.
Will sb be sacrified?? (I hope not - I love them all too much, would kill me too - at least make me really sad)

And the, and I hope I don’t make this one up, because that’s my fav: I once read aout a move in chess of the pawn becoming the queen.
My theory to this would be: Bella, a “weak” person, more in the background when it comes to fight and red because of her blood/life, becomes the white queen - strong and up in the front and she will take the black king down (Black King = a Volturi??)

Something funny I just noticed: Edward and Alice are playing chess in Eclipse (p.58)

by Elliot on May 31, 2008

edit: Just saw (made the pic a little bigger): they are standing on a marble floor - coincidence or refering to Bella’s description of Edward and his family being “marble gods”?

by Rachael on May 31, 2008

Someone, somewhere else but I forget where, said they thought the red pawn represents Bella while she’s a human hence the red = blood. And that the white queen is her as a vampire.

And maybe, because the red pawn is in the background it becomes her past and her as a vampire is predominant in this book.

I don’t know. :S

But I love it.

by Famouslastgrl on May 31, 2008

the little red pawn is supposed to be bella before she “changes”. You know small red *because she is alive) the big white queen is bella after she “changed”. More powerful, white becuase she is a vampire.

by Aisling on May 31, 2008

what does it mean???? is the pawn red because bella is undecided about her fate? is the pawn jacob? is the queen bella on her wedding day or after she’s changed????

SO MANY QUESTIONS!!!

it’s great but i hate the suspense….it’s killing me..!!

by MeloDies on May 31, 2008

Adios,Besos. (:

In english:

Aii what means that? … Mmm the truth that cover I do not like much that we say and I see whenever it I am hopeless when thinking that I will have the book in my hands in 5 MONTHS! ): … Fodder that the queen is Beautiful then the subject of to be vampiresa yet and that, and with respect to the laborer I suppose that he is Jacob I back leave since it by my dear Edward: D, Although I only suppose not.
Bye,Kisses (:

by Ms. Edward Cullen on May 31, 2008

I agree with the theory that the red pawn is Bella before she is changed and the white Queen is her after she is changed

by claribel on May 31, 2008

ok here we go. the queen has to be bella and its white meaning pure, strong, clean or “vampire” because of the chalky skin. just a guess. chess board definatly belongs to alice and edward some bussiness their and decisions have to be made. decisions that might lead to winning the game but sacrificing something else because of that win. hints the red pawn. its red meaning death, blood. something crazy is going to happen i can feel it. im so excited. my god. wow. please let bella become a vampire.please

by Carly on May 31, 2008

my friend and i were talking and we think that since theres one white queen and one red pawn that the queen represents the cullens and how they can move quickly from their problems but the red pawn represents their problems and how they can always eventually catch up.

by shannonlee009 on May 31, 2008

i like it! but it was really unexpected/

by Switzerland on May 31, 2008

i do love it..but i think to fit the other covers it shouldnt have the chess board..but it needs the chess board..hmm.
I think Carly had a great theory and also all the people saying one was bella human and the stone was bella vampire.

by Switzerland on May 31, 2008

omg! or maybe since bella is sooo clumsy something doesnt go right when she changes into a vampire, and stiil inside of her (kind of like the host but not exactly) her human is still in there. Maybe when she is hungry for blood she still has that sick feeling because her human is still there and cant eat food cause of the vampire side. Maybe she gets really weak with all that happening and someone shows up like the nomads and she is to weak…wow i have an active imagination. omg i am so excited for it to come out!

by April on May 31, 2008

the queen is Bella and the red pawn is danger coming for her again, or maybe it means the old human Bella and the new vampire Bella. I think the cover is ok , but maybe when I really do know what it the queen and pawn means I love the cover.

by April on May 31, 2008

I really like what Elliot says, it makes sense

by Nikki on May 31, 2008

……. Tee.
That is so awesome!

by Mary on May 31, 2008

Elliot, you are a life saver. LOL
I’ve been trying to dig up some meaning for this picture, but I think you got it all. Especially the last part you said about the pawn (probably Bella) becoming a white queen. I think you make some sense!
Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse’s covers are all very subtle, still with meaning of course, but Breaking Dawn’s cover has a lot more going on. I think they did a great job with it.

by jakesgirl on May 31, 2008

well…i’m not so sure if i like it as much as the other ones but it is nice. it just doesn’t look like it fits and it’s so much more elaborate then the other three. i guess i’m just drawn more to the simplicity of the other covers. don’t get me wrong, i DO like it. just not as much… =/

by Angelica on May 31, 2008

omg omg freaking out ahhhh im soo excited

by banana nut muffin on May 31, 2008

it’s okay, but i liked a lot of the fan covers better. *shrug* oh well, it’s not about the cover, it’s about the story inside. woot.

by FromTwilightToDawn on May 31, 2008

i love this cover. it’s probably my favorite one out of the four. i know everyone is trying to guess what the cover means, but i don’t think it will have that much to do with the story. the first three covers (at least in my opinion) didn’t reveal much about the stories, so what makes this one different?

by brianaaa on May 31, 2008

i love the coverr but, what does it mean?!?

by Sydney on May 31, 2008

I love the cover also! I just wonder what it means. But has anyone read the first chapter of Breaking Dawn? I hope Edward or Carlisle changes her. I love the books and each one just seems to get better every time i read them.

by Nicki on May 31, 2008

This is nice. :)

by Aleash on May 31, 2008

The pawn is the weakest chess piece. Therefore, along with the many times Bella needed to be saved and her balance problems, I believe it represents Bella’s human life that most likely be given up when she becomes a vampire. The possible symbol for the queen (the most powerful piece?) My theory as to why the pawn is red: Some time after the weding the Cullens and Bella will fake her death breaking her ties with the humans in her life. Because, once transformed, Bella will no longer be able to see them. The elongated k in the word Breaking might also correspond with the aforementioned since it invokes the image of a sword/knife. At the same time it emphasizes the word king. If the queen signifies Bella as a vampire, would Edward be the king (in chess the weakest but most important piece;) and if true, would Bella’s power be greater than Edward’s? The king/queen might, however, refer to the Volturi, seen as vampire royalty. Also, I’m not sure if I remember this correctly, didn’t Alice see a vision when she and Edward were playing chess in Eclipse? What the vision was might give us a better clue as to the meaning of the Breaking Dawn cover.
I just noticed the Quileute pack are not in my cover theories. Aw… Darn it. We need a positive conclusion for the treaty and a happy ending for Jacob. Maybe they are somehow a part of one of the possible symbols on the cover. But, perhaps I am over analyzing the Breaking Dawn cover.

by Aleash on May 31, 2008

I forgot to mention something along with the sowrd/knife in the word king. In chess a player can end the game by laying the king down on the board symbolizing the death of the king by cutting his throat. This could mean that one of the leaders of the Volturi, either Aro, Marcus, or Caius could die. If the king is Edward, then maybe he has trouble when goes to turn Bella. The backlash would be too great if Edward was to die, and I think Stephenie said she would not let that happen.

by Lil' CD on May 31, 2008

@ Aleash……u totally have a point in the meaning of the cover…..and i just bought the SE of Eclipse today!!!!! thats how i first found out

by Emilia on May 31, 2008

I like it.
Not sure what it means.
I think it could mean: The white piece, the Queen is Bella as a vampire. I don’t know though…hmmm…

by Bianca :) on June 2, 2008

I really liked the cover its not t al lsomething I expected it to be but its cool.

and Idk what it could mean but maybe the white queen is Bella and edward the red one always protecting her or maybe edward is the red and jacob the white and Bella is indecisive on who to choose liek what move to make…who knows but it could stand for a lot of things.

I really like it tho :D

by Ashleyga on June 2, 2008

ok….. so i think bella is going to to have like the ultimate power as a vampire ..not sure what yet still thinking….but she will be even more powerful than the volutire ( think i spelled it wrong) thats what it means so bellas the queen and edward is the pawn

by Katrina on June 2, 2008

edward cannot die!!!!!!!!!

by stepha on June 2, 2008

omg…i hope this is not what it means but someone told me they 100% sure that edward is going to kill bella becasue of the preface or something b.c it said soemthign like she never thought the one she loved would try to kill her…but maybe that could be jacob…AHH IDK…i just hope no one awsome dies…well excpt for jacob, he can die…i wouldnt be too sad…i would be upset but not as upset compared to if edward or bella died

by Abby Nix on June 2, 2008

OMG OMG!!!!! I totally LOVE the cover for Breaking Dawn! But I havn’t read the first chapter yet, so i cant really decifer what it means. But at least I know its a queen, but I have no idea what its about. And its really bugging me! BUT I still TOTALLY love the cover! Its kinda different from the others. But My sis told me she KNEW there would be read on it! And Ill be darned, there was!!!!!!!! ha !

Love,
Abby!

by eamcismine on June 2, 2008

OMG!!!!!!! what does it mean?????? its so cool! i like how the pieces reflect off the chess board! does this mean maybe bella is standing up for herself or something?? idk! but it rocks!!

by AlicelovesJasper on June 2, 2008

I freakin love the cover…omfg!!!i hope breaking dawn comes soon i dont think i could wait much longer….*gasp* i love jasper!!!

by Kaley on June 2, 2008

i think it means that the vampire queen and king are coming for bella.

by Mirany on June 2, 2008

Hmm. I really don’t like the cover much. Sure, it has a lot of meaning to it, but, as has been said - the simplicity of the other covers was so great. I loved how with the first three you never got tired of looking at the cover, because there was something about it that was different. I remember always looking at the colors on the first cover and the way the hands held the apple, and the lighting…this cover doesn’t have that magic. It looks fan-made.

But as to what it could mean…

While most people see it to mean that Bella will be changed into a vampire, it COULD also mean something a bit more sinister.

I hate this theory. I hate myself for thinking of it. But there’s always the little possibility that Bella won’t be changed, or something bad will happen before the change.

Seeing Bella as the pawn again. The red represents her humanity, the blood. She is a pawn because she is still human and the pawn is weak. But the red could also signify her standing out to Edward and all vampires, marking her (little RED flag here) as she is.

The large white queen is, obviously, a vampire. Now, notice the distance from the red pawn to the queen. Some might say that it is Edward (ignoring the fact that the queen is “female”, I think this has to do with the queen being most powerful.) protecting her from some sort of enemy. Maybe it is Edward, but I don’t think it would be protective. It doesn’t look right to me. It looks like he (still assuming it’s Edward) is coming towards the pawn, Bella. This could have something to do with the wedding, the board just reminds me of that.

Or, if it isn’t Edward, who could it be? I can answer that. The way the pieces are in relation makes me think it is an enemy. So, a vampire enemy? Who could that be? Oh, hm. Let me think. The Volturi? Or maybe - maybe - leftovers from Victoria’s newborn army, matured. This is what I can’t say for sure. If the rest of my theory is right (a long shot, but it could be) then it could be any vampire who dislikes Bella, or wants to lure the Cullens in, like James wanted to. It could be a new character. But I think it would be more likely to be a female, because, of course, it is a queen. It could be male, though, because the queen may signify only power, not gender.

Like I said, I don’t want this to be right, but I got a pretty bad feeling in the pit of my stomach when I saw this.

by jamison on June 2, 2008

I love the cover and i stood in the bookstore to read the first chapter !!!!!!!!!lol

by twilight_roxs_my_soxs on June 2, 2008

i hate my self for thinking this but maybe bella and edward wont end up together here is somthing bella says that makes me think that

“dont be afraid”i murmured.”we belong together.”
i was abruptly overwhelmed by the truth of my own words. this moment was so perfect so right, there was noway to doubt it. HI arms wrapped around me,holding me agianst him… it felt like every nerve ending in my body was a live wire. “forever.” he agreed

see she already know she loves edward and they belong together so yeah i am really depressed becasue of that i want edward and bella to be toghter so badly !
comment on that to let me know what u think am i right is she talking to jacob or is she talking to edward

she could be talking about edward like how is doesnt need to be afriad she will marry him and like when she says that she relizes she really does belong with him and that i really doesnt matter what people think!

NOW PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHATU R THINK I WANT TO KNOW IF U THINK THAT IT IS JOCAB OR EDWARD AND WHY! :)

by ray ray on June 2, 2008

Oh my goodness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stephanie you really out did yourself! Wow this gives me so many ideas about what is inside the cover just from its own meaning, like seriously amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t wait for the book to come out seeing as this cover is like freakin’ sweet. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your torturning me. But I can wait.=D

by Twilight...obsessed much? on June 2, 2008

it doesnt really fit in with the other three
but i still like it! :)

by Karina on June 2, 2008

I think that the cover rocks! I think that the cover means that the queen is the last one stading and in other turns it means that it is the last book. Or that Bella is that queen and she’s a new born and the red one is all the troubles that are waiting for her.

by Ayla on June 2, 2008

Oh! I like the cover! I am so excited for this book. Really wish it was comming out sooner….

by zclickety on June 2, 2008

I’d like to think that because the book is told from Bella’s perspective, that this is how she perceives her life. Edward could be the queen, because he is white, marble, and also the most powerful peice on the chess board– he is only the most important peice because Bella has made him so. I think that Jacob is the red pawn, not only because he is mortal, but also because of his heritage. Again, he is the pawn because Bella perceives him that way. Not that he is unimportant, but because she has chosen to make Edward more powerful in her life than Jacob.

haha but that’s just a guess.

by Ariel (a.k.a. Bella Marie) on June 2, 2008

I love the cover of the new book! its absolutely awesome! It goes great with all of the rest of the book covers!
I think the the queen is Bella and the color represents purity… as in like she is a new person or “Vampire” in her case. The red pawn… honestly i have don’t know… could mean danger that is coming the the next book… like the Volturi?? who knows. But way to go Stephanie!!!!! You’ve really done it again!

by Sammi Sam on June 2, 2008

What if this means that Bella becomes this queen when she is a Vampire… then leaves Edward behind…??? :(

by Penny on June 2, 2008

it symbolizes the “plays” in life. Every decision made affects the rest of the game play, and every thing that happens in your life affects another. i think it’s more symbolic than representing the characters.

think about it, none of the others symbolize characters.

by Megan on June 3, 2008

yeah i like it sort of, the others are more attractive this doesn’t fit in with the pattern of the other book covers but thats probably because this books about a change. I think the queen is Bella and the pawn is Jacob lurking in the background, and its red because his furs a reddy brown colour.
But still woohoo for Breakign Dawn :)

by Aleash on June 3, 2008

I someone told me the other day when a pawn reaches the other side of the board, it becomes a queen. Knowing that now, I can definitly say that the red pawn symbolizes Bella’s humanity and the white queen Bella as a vampire.

by edwards_brand_of_heroin on June 4, 2008

everyone’s saying how complicated the design is but the book’s written in edwards point of veiw and his mind is probably a lot more complicated than bella’s.

by Mirany on June 4, 2008

This isn’t written in Edward’s point of view. That’s Midnight Sun.

by edward``````` on June 4, 2008

yeah mirany is right midnight sun is writting in edwards piont of view this i s breaking dawn

by anny on June 4, 2008

dose any one else think it wierd that all the covers have the same three colors red, white, and, black

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

I think that the cover is AMAZZAZING! It is sooooooooooooooo much better than the others.

This doesn’t really have that much 2 do with the cover, bur when I was in the bookstore, I sat and read the first chapter of breaking dawn. the prologue made it sound like bella was having second thoughts about becombing a vampire, cause it said something like: “what more can you give to the one you love, than your life?” Um… Something like that…. but then again she could be talking about Jacob, or getting married… but something about thte way it was worded made it sound like it was about her becoming a vampire. (I think jacob is an @$$. I really hate him!)

I reallly really really want bella and edward to stay together and for bella to be a vampire. I’m afraid that because everyone is expecting them to live happily ever after and like stay togethter and stuff, that stephanie will make bella pick jacob. (EWWWW) I totally would hate that ending! Edward is sooooooo much better than Jacob. Jacob is selfish and mean!

But if Edward and bella do stay together, I think that Edward will bite her at the very end of the book, and that the epilogue will be about Bella’s life as a vampire.

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

You know wat? I think I am gonna go buy the new version of eclipse at Barnes & Nobles! I’ve already got the old version, but I can’t take it anymore! I need 2 know SOMETHING!

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

Oh. My. God. I just realized the most horrible thing. This series is based on “A Midsummer Nights Dream!” Holy cr@p! That means that bella will almost definately fall in love with Jacob. This suckds eggs!

Ok on a somewat unrelated point, I read on wikipedia: “The preface of Breaking Dawn describes Bella’s life as being in danger once more, but this time from someone she loves. Bella states that she can’t help loving this person even as he or she is about to kill her.” But since this book is written from Bella’s perspective there is a key word in this statement : DANGER. If bella wanted to be a vampire, she would not use the word danger. ( Then again mabey the preface is talking about danger from Jacob, or something. But again with the way that they worded it.)

Now I am really scared. I am definately gonna go get that book now.

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

Wow. I really am posting too much, but..
I think that the whole thing about the kand the sword and how it emphassizes king is a coincidendce. amm of the other covers have had long letters like that too. The L in Twilight is long but it doesnt simbolize anything. You could also say it emphasises the word light, but how does that fit in the story?
See what I mean?

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

Oh in the first line that was supposed to be king not kang. Srry.

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

Now do you all seee wat I maean about obsessed? And im just really really bored…

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

Wait. I just thought of something else. On the Steph meyer website it said that Jacob originally didn’t have that big of a part in the series, but she started to like him, so mabey she will stay with the original ending where Jacob wouldn’t even have been an option… Okay so its a long shot, but edward and bella have to be together!

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

Oh. I was just watching this video and it got me thinking… mabey jake will come and crash the wedding and somehow try to prove that the Cullens are vampires, or like mabey attack Edward or something…
I dont really know y im posting all this here since this is supposed to be about the cover, but this IS about Breaking Dawn…

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

Yay! I just got the special edition!

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

okay, so in the prologue, I dont really think Bella was having second thoughts about becomeing a vampire, exactly. I think that that was only part of it. I think she is questioning her love for edward. Cause it pretty much says that if you love someone and all you could give them was your life, how could you not give it? If it was someone you truly loved?
That part makes me think she is talking about edward…. but the rest of it sounds like she talki8ng about Jake, cause it referse to fighting or running. I couldn’t see her ever doiong that to edward.

Omg! I just had an apiphany! (I think I spellled that wrong…) The prologue says she was in a near death experience. Mabey jake comes back, so she wants to live with jake and give him her life and stuff, well mabey not wants to, but she feels bad for him, but she thinks it will be as good as dieing to be away from edward….no thats really stupid.

Hmmmm…. let me think about that. But i ACTUALLY DO HAVE SOMEHIGNTO SAY ABOUT THE COVER. I think that the white queen is Edward. I think that the pawn is jake and the pawn is red because he really wants to kill edward. And I think that he tries to in the boodks, and like, becomes the bad guy.

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

Okay. This is my final theory on the prologue. i think that Jake comes back and decides that he Would rathere bella be dead than a bloodsucker, so he tries to kill her, but she just can’t find it in her to run or fight, because it’s JACOB we’re talking about….

by Obsessed on June 6, 2008

hey, does anyone know how to delete stuff off here?

by Mirany on June 6, 2008

Okay. Guys. This is getting to me!

I really don’t think Jacob is going to come back into the books. EVER. Maybe be on the sidelines, but Bella made her choice, she had conviction, and it would be extremely pointless for her to make such a huge decision at the end of one book and change her mind in the next. Maybe there will be a little Jacob in there, but it seems highly unlikely that he will play a major part, or try to come and screw up Bella’s life again.

by Micky on June 7, 2008

I have to say I disagree with Mirany. I’m pretty sure Jacob will come back! He said he would fight until the very second Bella was a Vampire. There is no way he’ll just give up that easily, not after all the stuff he’s gone through so far. I think the cover is interesting, I don’t dislike it, but the fact that it’s making me go crazy with questions doesn’t make me like it either. I think that it could possibly have something to do with the part in chapter 2 of Eclipse when Edward and Alice played chess. Everybody keeps talking about the elongated K, and how it could be talking about the King in chess. Which I find interesting and seems to relate to chapter 2 when Alice flicks her king over and surrenders. I don’t know. I’m just guessing like everyone else.

I am extremely excited and nervous about the book. Especially after reading that it’s similar to “A Midsummer Nights Dream”. Anybody who’s read that play knows that there is a lot of chaos. So I really hope it’s not like that. I don’t think I could take it if Bella didn’t end up with Edward. We shall see!

by Jennifer on June 9, 2008

Elliot and Mirany–really intelligent theories about the meaning of the cover. I’m convinced that the white queen in the foreground represents Bella, changed into a vampire–strong and bloodless. Her past self is represented by the weak and blood-filled pawn in the background. And yes, perhaps she’ll use her newfound powers to defeat the Volturi–black kings with their long, black robes. Just because that’s the most logical theory for the meaning of the cover, though, doesn’t mean the book will turn out that way. The previous covers have had only tenuous connections to the content of the books.

I do agree a bit with Obsessed about the meaning of _Breaking Dawn_’s preface. Is Bella questioning her love for Edward? Is Bella thinking, “if I *really* loved Edward, I *would* be willing to give my life to him, but I’m unwilling to give my life to him, so I must not love him?” Perhaps. If this is the case, though, it would be a pretty serious flaw in the novels. It would be *such* a radical departure from the material in the previous three books that it would delegitimize the series entirely. (Trust me–I’ve read the first three books twice.) A surprise ending is legitimate “(1) if seems logical and natural as we look back over the story and (2) if it reinforces the meaning of the story.” A surprise ending that found Bella unchanged and with Jacob would be a kind of fictional fraud. That doesn’t mean Meyer won’t do it, but it’d subtract from the status and authority of this so-called “epic love story.”

Another possibility is that Bella is referring to Jacob in the preface, not Edward. (I do think that Jacob will reappear in _Breaking Dawn_, *unfortunately*.) Obsessed suggested this, too. This makes some sense to me. Will Jacob try to kill Bella in order to prevent her from becoming a “bloodsucker?” Perhaps she’s questioning her supposed “love” for Jacob?

Let’s just hope that Jacob imprints on someone (Leah Clearwater, perhaps?) and leaves Bella and Edward alone.

Oh, and one more thing–where do you see the similarities to _A Midsummer Night’s Dream_? I don’t see that at all. It makes a lot more sense to look to Jane Austen’s _Pride & Prejudice_ (Meyer’s self-proclaimed “favorite-favorite” novel), in which the hero (Mr. Darcy) and heroine (Elizabeth Bennet) live happily ever after, after conquering enormous odds. Bella is a heroine patterned very much after Elizabeth Bennet.

Jennifer, If you go to the Twilight Lexicon they have a whole discussion on the Midsummer Night’s Dream thing.

P.S. Did someone delete the stuff i wrote here? I wrote a long paragraph on the meanings of the Titles. Ill just reapost it I guess.

I am a little freaked out about the name of this book. I might just be paronoied though…

Well, It seems to me that SM always casts Jacob as the sun and Edward as the moon.

The first book was called Twilight. During Twilight the moon rises. ( This could signafie Edward becoming a part of Bella’s life.)

The second book was called New Moon. A New Moon is a night where there is no moon. It’s the darkest night. ( This could signafie when Edward left Bella.)

The third book was called Eclipse. During an eclipse the moon covers the sun. ( This could signafie when Bella chooses Edward over Jacob.)

The last book is called Breaking Dawn. Dawn is the time of day when the sun rises and the moon falls. (I really really hope that this doesn’t signafie Bella ultimately chooseing jake over Edward.)

Will someone please tell me that I am wrong annd that that is a really stupid theoery! *Sob*

Obsessed–a couple things. Someone today told me that she attended a Stephenie Meyer book signing and Q&A, and that Meyer said that the series was not related to _A Midsummer Night’s Dream_.

Second, I like your interpretation of the titles. Interesting. Yes, “breaking dawn” suggests that the sun is rising … but “break” also means “to fracture.” Could it be that that Jacob, represented by dawn/the sun, is broken or defeated somehow? I know, I know. I don’t like it–sounds like wishful thinking to me. Break can also mean “to undergo a change or enter a new state.” Perhaps the title refers to Bella’s new day, her “dawn,” as a vampire. Still a little weak, but more logical than the first. What do you think?

I agree, I will not be happy if Bella chooses Jacob at the end of the book. It really does seem cruel to lead us, the readers, on this way and then crush our hopes at the end. As I wrote above, Jane Austen’s _Pride & Prejudice_ is Meyer’s favorite novel. Austen, herself, lost the love of her life; she knew not to take love for granted, even in the pages of her fiction. That’s why she unites Darcy and Elizabeth at the end of the novel; that’s why _P&P_ is *the* epic love story.

I like your theory about the tiltle of Breaking Dawn a lot more than mine. I really hope you are right. I really really really really really want Bella to end up with Edward!

by Obsessed on June 11, 2008

Oh, and about the Midsummer Nights Dream thing. It is only related to the last book, Breaking Dawn. I think that for some reason (like in AMSND) a lot of things will go amiss, but in the end, Bella will end up with edward, like hermia and Lysander.

by Im a boy...is that wierd that i read twilight/others and am obsessed with the series? on June 11, 2008

I hav a few guesses.

1)The red pawn represents Jacob(!?!?) and the white queen represents an extremely powerful vampire…such as Jane. I think this (maybe) cuz i heard it was about Jacob being retarded and getting himself in who knows what kind of danger.

(not really)2) I know almost 100% that Bella will be turned into a vampire cuz if u look in the preface for each book, you’ll see that it has sumthin to do with the main idea/ending. We have to think wierd here. All of them are so wierdly written that they r at first hard too understand. She could give her life to Edward as in let him take her life and turn her into a vamp. But maybe (i reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllyyyyy hate 2 say this) but maybe Bella’s gonna sacrifice herself for a greater purpose(is that possible!?!?!).

3) I guess that queen mumbo jumbo about all powerful queen vampire Bella.

I can’t wait 4 the next book! The suspense is eating me alive!!! Or should i say biting me to death? Watever! However you want to say it.

But im a boy and i am super obsessed with this series. Enough to write this coment and make guesses and preorder it on amazon. Is that wierd???

by Obsessed on June 12, 2008

Its not wierd at all. Actually, one of my friends that was a boy, got me Twilight for my birthday, because he liked it, an thought I would. And that was when I first started reading the Twilight series. And, I got another of my friends that was a boy to start reading the series. He’s actually reading Eclipse now.

by Tricia on June 13, 2008

Like some of the others before me, I totally believe that the red pawn represents Bella as a not-so-durable human, while the white queen represents the power that comes along with becoming a vampire.

I honestly hope that Bella does become a vampire, so that she and Edward can be together forever, but someone on a different forum had mentioned the connection of Edward and Jacob to the titles of the novels, and I can say that the title ‘Breaking Dawn’ worries me. As this other person mentioned, Twilight represents the beginning of the Moon’s [more prevalent] appearance in the sky, making Edward the moon. During new moons, the moon disappears, which is what happened with Edward. And as Jacob mentioned at the end of Eclipse, Edward’s presence in Bella’s life eclipses Jacob’s presence, which happens during a solar eclipse. Obviously Jacob represents the sun, which Bella has mentioned several times [though she sometimes calls him her substitute sun]. Even the title for Twilight a la Edward’s version ["Midnight Sun"] applies to the analogies.

If this trend of Edward = Moon and Jacob = Sun continues, what does the title Breaking Dawn mean? Does that mean that Jacob reemerges? Or does it just mean that a new is coming for Edward and Bella to live through together?

Either way, ugh. Is it August yet?

by =] on June 14, 2008

I think that the Queen will be Bella, and that the pawn is someone from the Vultori coming to get her. Because didn’t one of them say that they would get Bella if she wasn’t turned?
It seems like that to me, and I agree to what Tricia says.
The title doesn’t worry me, because it just makes me want to read it more and more.

by Obsessed on June 14, 2008

Oh. Tricia, I think I was the one who said the thing about the titles. I think I was just being paronoined… or at least I hope I was…

by Jolie on June 15, 2008

HI EVERYONE!!!!!!!

I’m here to comment on the Breaking Dawn cover! I LOVE IT!!!!!!! It is absolutely PERFECT!!!!!!! Everyone has different opinions, and I respect them, but I definitely think that Breaking Dawn has an awesome cover! But I love the other covers as much as I love this ones!!!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3

And I love how everyone has just been brainstorming on what the cover really means!!!!!! :) I have to agree with the theory of the red pawn being Bella when she was a human. And the white queen being Bella as a newly transformed vampire. But when you think about it, all the other ideas also make sense too!

So I guess we’ll just have to find out on August 2nd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG! I CAN”T WAIT THAT LONG!

by carly on July 8, 2008

ok i agree with you guys that bolth the pawn and the queen represent bella (pawn=bella as a weak human queen=bella as strong vampire) but have you guys notices how there on different colors so they are against each other!!!!! for me this can mean 2 things. meaning one: bella fighting with her thirst as a vampire (the strong queen= vampire thirst and little red pawn= bella human side trying to remind her to resist but is not doing a very good job because it is in the back round and it is a pawn vs. a queen) OR it could mean human bella(the pawn) is in love with Edward because it is on the white marble square (and bella does refere to Edward as being white as hard and as cold as marble) and the queen(vampire bella) is on black (either jocob BLACK or undecided ground like she doesn’t know who she will choose). Have you guys noticed the marble is mostly white(mostly Edward) while it has a little black(tiny bit of Jacob). in the end i hope Edward and bella are together forever as vampires and Jacob is happy because he imprinted on some other girl so bella wont have to feel guilty about him being sad or lonely!!
