I think that maybe Edward was talking with Bella, and that maybe somehow the subject of humans/vampires came up. Like, Edward was telling Bella that if she changed her mind, he would understand, or that she could still have the chance to be with someone human, like Mike… and that if she went with her decision to become a vampire, that there was no going back, and that she would never have the opportunity to be with someone (like Mike)… (I get that there are MANY flaws to that theory, but just pretend that there isn’t, okay :] )

and then Bella attempted to lighten the mood,
“Oh Mike! How will I go on?” etc.
