No Catherine Hardwicke for New Moon

Summit has just confirmed that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke will not be returning to direct New Moon. Official statement:

SUMMIT BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW MOON DIRECTOR

Los Angeles, CA, December 7, 2008 – Summit Entertainment and director Catherine Hardwicke jointly announced today that the filmmaker will not be directing the next installment in the newly minted TWILIGHT film franchise. Summit’s targeted end of 2009 or early 2010 release of the film, NEW MOON, does not work with Ms. Hardwicke’s required prep time to bring her vision of the film to the big screen. Thus as has been done before with many successful film franchises, the studio will employ a new director for NEW MOON.

“I am sorry that due to timing I will not have the opportunity to direct NEW MOON,” said Hardwicke. “Directing TWILIGHT has been one of the great experiences of my life, and I am grateful to the fans for their passionate support of the film. I wish everyone at Summit the best with the sequel– it is a great story.”

“Catherine did an incredible job in helping us to launch the TWILIGHT franchise and we thank her for all of her efforts and we very much hope to work with her on future Summit projects,” said Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production. “We as a studio have a mandate to bring the next installment in the franchise to the big screen in a timely fashion so that fans can get more of Edward, Bella and all of the characters that Stephenie Meyer has created. We are able to pursue an aggressive time frame as we have the luxury of only adapting the novels into screenplays as opposed to having to create a storyline from scratch.”

  • whoever the new director is, dont screw up new moon.

    twilight totally rocked.

  • Morning Twilighters,
I have started a petition to Bring Back Catherine. Please sign if you would like too. She put so much of her heart into this film. Understanding the love we have for each book. No one will have enough love and energy to bring us our beloved Twilight films :(

  • Tiffani:

you have brought(twiligthers) our beloved book to life. no one else could ever do a better job in putting Blood, Sweat & Tears to bring justice to the book. please come back, with you the film(s) would be in good hands. no eles could do a better job. the film was directed by cathirene and want to end with her, and to see her vision grow.

  • twihard:

I doubt any petition will bring back Catherine, that’s a lost cause right there. If it’s already been announced it’s pretty much set in stone.

  • Courtney:

    noooooooooooo!

  • TwilightIsForever:

NO! come on twilighters! can you seriously trust another director who could screw the movie up completely so it’s ABSOLUTELY nothing like the book?! i simply do NOT trust any other director with these movies. and it’s not catherine that needs replaced, it’s melissa rosenberg! they need to keep catherine! she’s the only person who will, without a doubt, stay true to the rest of the movies!

  • thats ok! i mean did you see the reviews! she sucked anyway! The movie was amazing! but that was only becuase it was twilight! I mean everyone was seriously over acting! did you see the hospital scene at the end of the movie! “What i bu- i – u -ta- uh- no -wha- cha- bu- what are you saying?” WHAT ARE YOU SAYING???????? OMG talk about over acting!!!!! I think stephenie meyer should direct it!

  • This is emi this time…. but..i did kinda comment on the last one…like the hospital scene..it was horrible..we just watched it on youtube…lol….SHE NEEDS TO ACT LIKE EDWARD REALLY WANTS TO LEAVE HER!!!..dude..he’ s like, her soulmate….i think she would react a little more obsessively…that just stuttering….she would…die most likely.,.(and yes…i HAVE read New Moon…but still!!!!!! JEEZ!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nahh;; Goodbye Catherinee.!

i LOVE the decision for New Director[s]
Catherine – even tho i loved twilight – could
    have made it better.

Since she was soo ‘passionate’ why didn’t
    it reach our expectations?

Oh Well. We’ll Have to Deal.

    :]

  • TwilightIsForever:

    catherine WAS passionate.
i’d like to see someone else do so much better with the crappy budget that was given to her.
if she didn’t have such a sucky budget they would have put in some dream scenes.
which they couldn’t because of the lack of money!

    SUMMIT SUCKS!
they have just ruined the upcoming movies.
    I HATE SUMMIT!

  • toya:

well i hope whoever is the new director does a good job.

not saying catherine didnt do a good job, just saying lets see wat kind of work the new guy will do.

and YEA give them a better budget. they could have gotten much better things in Twilight.

  • TwilightIsForever:

    exactly TOYA!
    better budget = better movie!
    it’s that easy!
    lol.

    stupid summit…
    ugh!
    >=[

this new director better not screw up the movies.
or they'll be very very sorry.
    >=]

  • Vickie:

Aww! She did a really great job with Twilight. And I agree early 2010 or late 2009 is not enough time for New Moon to be amazing.
Oh well, I do hope that New Moon is directed by a female though… it is kind of hard for a male to direct what a female main character is feeling… possible, but not easy…

This director better be good or I will be royally pissed off.

  • TWO WORDS : ALFONSO CUARON

  • ali:

hmm.this means that if they rush it it will be half ass and for all the twilighters out there i kno we dont want that..she did a great job on twilight and im sure she would do a great job for the rest.i understand the position they are being put in but they have to be patient.if they rush things the movie wont be as good and it wont make near as much money(which is what they want.of course)and they wont get what they wanted..i think this is a big mistake and they need her back.this person probably wont connect to the actors like catherine did.she is the only director that really could pull this off!bring her back…hey.anybody wanna protest with me?:)

  • ali k:

Y’all, just because they’ve got a new director doesn’t mean they’ll be rushed and ruin the film! Give the poor new chap a chance! I think Catherine’s style was edgy, yeah, and not at all cheesy, but the direction could have been much better. She was refreshing, and it was an entertaining movie, but I feel like there wasn’t as much depth to it as in the book. I know — it can’t be exactly the same, but we didn’t really see Bella’s obsession with Edward. And some of the editting…well, it looked like the school film I did three years ago in eigth grade.
So…let’s just support Summit’s choice right now and give the new director (whoever that may be) a chance before we start raising hell with petitions and harsh criticism. Be good fans, please?

  • Danni:

The screenwriter needs to go.. not Catherine she did the best she could with what little was given.

  • Rachel:

So, the news about Catherine Hardwicke not directing Twilight is somewhat saddening. I think she is a great director, I do think she made some great blunders directing Twilight, and so I am anxious to see if someone else can do a better job bringing Stephenie’s world to life. New Moon is a difficult book, it’s heartbreaking and it changes the entire scope of the story. I think the director who did the Harry Potter the Prisoner of Azkaban could do a great job, because he has the same gritty stylistic tone as Hardwicke but is a better filmmaker overall. My biggest hope is that Stephenie play a huge role in the adaptation

  • AK:

It sounds like she is spending all of her time on twilight right now, doing premiers and the DVD. So that is probably why she won’t have time to do the next two right now.
The movie almost felt like a movie someone would see on TV, and not in a movie theater. Some of the shots cut the actors off or seemed pointless, the meadow scene seemed to be almost skipped over when they could have saved some of those lines from the previous scenes for the meadow scene. I think the script was fine and the actors were great, but it seemed to not flow in some places.
Hopefully the new director will keep the movie sort of in the same tone so that both movies make sense together. They also have the same time to film and produce new moon as they did with twilight, they started filming twilight last march.
We should know soon who the new director will be.

  • Shantel:

Great. Now we’ll have NO IDEA how the movie will be until it comes out. I’m going to go insane!

I hope the new director does a great job!

  • M:

The reason hardwick didn’t want to go in on the next movie was because of time right? because they had the script ready and wanted to start shooting but she didn’t think the scripted was ready/fine toonned yet… they wanted it to come out late 2009 or the beginning of 2010. So if anything the date will be sooner… I sure it won’t take them long to come up with a new directer ! lol. If anything the movie will probably get made faster :p. Directers are proubly lining up for the job…(And actors for new roles) I just hope they get someone good :| … Like I wouldn’t mind if they got the guy that did the third Harry Potter movie (the prisoner of askaban) I forget his name. I loved that movie. But I don’t know if him being consider is just a rumar or not.

  • Jessica Minozzo:

    ohmy gahhh !
    im so sad !
cuz likeee…. oh my gahhh wat if they get A WORST director???
    omfg !
    this is wrong

  • Julia:

I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED AND MISERABLE RIGH TNOW.
CATHERINE HARDWICKE DID A SATISFYING JOB AND ALL YOU HATERS (ABOVE) ARE VERY MEAN TO HER. YOU PEOPLE ONLY CARE ABOUT HOW PERFECT THE MOVIE SHOULD BE AND YOU DON’T EVEN CARE ABOUT HOW HARD SHE WORKED! HAVE SOME RESPECT.

    I BEG YOU.

  • michelle:

    that’s kind of weird…=(

  • Meaghan:

I think that it sucks that she won’t be doing the sequel. It is kind of scary to think it will be in someone else’s hands. But maybe they can improve upon what Catherine Hardwick started. Good luck to them and can’t wait for New Moon!!

  • abby:

Is it because Catherine wanted a bigger budget for New Moon? Summit has said they did not want to increase the budget. News to Summit…BIG mistake if you don’t increase the budget!

  • valuree:

I hate to see her go- I just hope that the next director is able to bring to the screen the passion between Edward & Bella and have more of the book in order instead of the choppiness in the movie- LOVE the movie don’t get me wrong- seen it 3 times & plan to see it again but it was lacking the intensity of Bella & Edwards love- Can’t wait for NEW MOON & ECLIPSE- SOOOO EXCITED!!

  • Alice:

Yes! Great news!!! she totally messed up the movie — hopefully the new director will actually do a good job!

  • Meaghan:

Has anyone heard anymore news on if they are getting anew Jacob? That would really suck he was an awesome Jacob and I think he has great potential for New Moon. If they keep changing people they are going to piss a lot of fans off, not a good idea.

  • OMG i wouldnt care who was directing it i would only care about the same acters as everyone stays the same caucse they are such a good team and ugh i love them so much they worked alsome togehter and all so yeah i really do hope all of them stay and really who cares about who director it is?

  • THAT SUCKS!!!! I LIKED HER!!!!!

  • I hope new moon will rock out loud!!!!! I love the coutdown on the site
