Oregon Business has an article about why New Moon is being shot in Vancouver instead of Oregon.
Portland Oregon’s starring role in teen vampire love story Twilight, the blockbuster film based on author Stephanie Meyer’s bestselling book series, has been a boon to the state’s film and tourism industry. But production incentives and wooing by the state film office weren’t enough to convince filmmakers to return for sequel New Moon, set to begin production this spring. Producer Summit Entertainment will relocate to Vancouver, British Columbia, and Italy, VP of publicity Vivian Mayer confirmed through an assistant.
Vince Porter, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Film and Television estimates producers spent $20 million in the state. New Moon, which is reportedly budgeted at $50 million, up from the $37 million Twilight budget, would likely have brought in even more.
Porter says filmmakers were partly concerned that Oregon wouldn’t have the production resources to support two Twilight sequels being made back-to-back. The lower Canadian dollar also made filming in British Columbia cheaper.

I agree. I was rather irritated to hear that they would not be returning to Portland to film. Canada’s not terribly far to drive but i’d take minutes over hours of course, to travel to a filming location. Come back to Oregon for “Eclipse” producers, PLEASE?!?!? Was it really that horrible here? C’mon! We won’t judge or berate you for your canadian misstep on New Moon. We’ll take ya back, no questions asked! lol

Ive known about the filming in Vancouver for a while. I live just outside of Vancouver. Its a 10 minute drive. Im so excited!! my mom and I are going to stalk the location lol. shes letting me skip school to go and find them

No offence to Canada, I LOVE you! But, this is the type of thing that is hurting our economy here in the states. It’s almost the rule to film in Canada now to save the studios money, but yet they are RAKING it in for Twilight. In my humble opinion, Oregon, with all its beauty, was a huge part of what made Twilight and almost like a character in and of itself the movie. This is sad…
I AGREE WITH JACOB BLACK FAN! Oregon has such a unique beauty, not the canada doesnt, but its what made the movies into Forks. And its my homelands! at least it was in Twilight so i can be proud of it there!
Canada offers a lot more to offer than Oregon. Im not putting Oregon down, its just that if they want New Moon and Eclipse to meet the high standards that fans around the world are putting on them, then Canada is a good choice. plus, i dont know if anyone remembers, but the cast use to complain that they had too many sunny days, delaying filming sometimes till the itty bitty hours. if the climate in Canada is more filming and twilight worthy than do it in Canada.

Faraway downs you have to consider the producers have to keep the budget in mind when they make a film and if they find a location that will look close enough to their first then they are going to shoot it there and considering they have to shoot in Rome and who knows how much it will cost to shoot there plus they probably had to up the casts paycheck for the second movie
well Vancouver is a whole lot closer to forks than oregon is so that makes sense, and besides i really dont care what their reasoning is, im glad because i am now right beside filming:)
I agree with you Michelle that they have to keep in budget, but they made ALL the money from Twilight and are using it in their pockets and not the next installment which they should use. They made WAY over 1oo million so double it and you get a better movie. Doubling it wont hurt them where it hurts, their wallets.
AND I agree with Mckenzie: I hated it when the Hogwarts castle changed! grrrr and it ruined the ENTIRE look. Maybe Chris will keep the flow together.
I agree with “Jacob_Black_fan “. So many movies are already being made in canada. They don’t have to be but they are. The northwest is a part of the series and it’s almost criminal to go somewhere else. I have no qualms against Canada, it’s a great place, honest. But with out economy in the crapper we need all the help we can right now instead of outsourcing filming to other countries. Just my .02 I guess.
I personally do not care where they film so long as it stays close to what the book says and how the scenery is described cuz if they don’t i will b pretty disapointed
Yeah, location is important… BUT like some of you have said, what matters MOST, is how true they will stay to the books, and that at the end we have AN AMAZING film
So, if they need to go somewhere else other than our own backyard (Oregon), lets support them and TRUST they will represent Stephenie’s vision and the world she has created, in the best way they can!!

Um no offense STACY, but Vancouver IS the pacific northwest. Its just north of where the REAL Forks is. It also has a much more advanced film industry than Oregon does… which will make the next movie that much better.

Yes, it is very exciting that Vancouver Island is a main location, especially for the mystical wild beauty of The Pacific Rim West Coast and especially Long Beach. If you google Cathedral Grove, Van. Is., you will see that the Douglas Fir trees are very similar to the enormous trees EdwARD & Bella climbed in Twilight. Over 70 metres high and up to 9 feet in diametre. There is so much rainfall on the Island also, so everything is covered in bright green moss and it is considered to be a rainforest. It’s breath takingly beautiful there. I hope they keep Catherine Hardwicke’s “organic feel” in New Moon. I also think that fans should not stalk the filming locations and just let them do what they need to do.
YES!!! When i watched twilight, it looked like my hometown, so I totally hoped they would film new moon in vancouver!! the views here are almost identical to what was in twilight. I hope i find out where they’re filming soon so I can get my stalk on. LOL!!

I agree with GO VAN, when i think about pacific northwest, VANCOUVER is the place i think of.. not Oregon. MANY movies are filmed here, you’d be amazed! I go to school at UBC, and there is nearly ALWAYS someone filming a movie..
They just finished filming some X-men thing and some The Rock movie.. just to name a few!

I think it’s dumb that they would film it in either place. They should have filmed it in Forks and Port Angeles because that’s where the books took place. I live in Port Angeles and it was really dissappointing to find out that they were not going to actually show the real places in the film.

yeah!!! i live in vancouver! (go canada woot woot!) and no offense to stacy but just because lots of movies are filmed here is not a reason to think twilight shouldn’t be filmed here. i think that the environment is great here, in places like stanley park, (the trees look a lot like the ones around the cullens house). i think vancouver is a perfect place for the story of jacob and bella to be brought to life! (P.S. i hope i get to see taylor lautner!! <3)
I think Canada is a hidden jewel. There is so much talent in Canada that it is about time that people here had the oppotunity to be involved in something so grand as the Twilight saga. I belive they wont fail and that it would be even better then the first movie. They should stick it out in Canada for the rest of the films.
Just gotta say I think filming in BC is an awesome plan! Especially if its true that they’ll be filming at the reserve close to my town!

I’m not concerned so much about the outside locations (Vancouver BC is just as beautiful as Oregon) but I don’t want Bella’s home or school to change. I know it’s just buildings but these are a huge part of the story. (Although I’m alright with them changing the Cullen house because it didn’t look anything like it was described in the books) Like someone else already said, it’s the same as when Hogwort’s was changed. Changes as small as a school or a home competely change the feel of the story.
I live in the town that some of the main parts in Twilight were filmed. I’m going to be so disappointed that they aren’t going to use the same house for Bella’s house. I live on the same street as that house and I dont know how they are going to find a house similar to it. I hope that with the new director they will do a better job on this movie than the first, not saying that the first wasn’t good it just could have been better. I am so thrilled for New Moon to start filming. Nicki made a very good point, little changes will ruin the movie. That was one of the reasons why the actor of Jacob had to stay, you can’t start changing the actors as well. I just hope that for the filming of Eclipse that they will return to Oregon. I’m very hopeful!
Sarah: Cool. So you live in St. Helens, then? I’m up in Rainier. Not in the town itself really, but on the “mountain” above it. Awesome view of the Columbia. I just went to St. Helens the other day, actually, and saw Bella’s house and stuff. And, the house is staying the same. No, not the same location, but they are rebuilding a house to make it look just like the one in St. Helens. There’s pics of this on NewMoonMovie.org, if you’re interested.
I’m not too happy about the change in location. I don’t like inconsistencies in movies like this. But, there’s nothing we can do. Gotta live with it. Hopefully the movie will be great, and much, much better than the first.
It’s kinda cool that I guessed the filming location of Pacific Rim National Park on Long Beach, Vancouver Island. Google Incinerator Rock at Long Beach. Apparently, last week Kristen Stew and Taylor Lautner were spotted. I think they were filming the infamous clift jump into the stormy cold ocean. Vancouver Is. is more than perfect for the outdoor scenes, but I do agree that they need to keep Bella’s house & school the same for continuity. I think Chris Weitz is going to do a fabulous job. At first I was feeling very loyal to Hardewick’s work, but I like the way Weitz is continuiing to cast relative unknown, yet beautiful characters for the Wolf pack and the start of the Volturi.
you know i actually found out that new moon is filming in my school because when i found they were working there i asked if it was new moon and the guy didn’t respond but did when i asked others so hopefully i can get in the movie as an extra that would be pretty cool

Srry guys, But Canada is beautiful, and were (I live in canada) really exited that we get to have a thing so big be filmed here. Also, EVERYTHING is filmed in the states, it sucks. I almost completely convinced my dad to go on a roadtrip with me to go visit and see if we might spot someone inportant there. Also, My friend and I are going on a roadtrip to forks sometime. I live less than 5 miles away from where twilight was filmed…my mom spent hours down there last year sometimes all night while I sat at college, this is such a rip off, is beautiful here
