Sheen, 40, who made his name with uncannily realistic portrayals of well-known figures in Oscar-winning films The Queen, Frost/Nixon and The Damned United, will get his biggest pay cheque yet, a reported £5million, to star in New Moon.
In New Moon, Sheen will play Aro, the leader of an Italian vampire clan called the Volturi.
Director Chris Weitz confirmed Sheen’s casting to The Mail on Sunday and said he had ‘aggressively’ pursued the actor.
‘Michael’s role is so important because he’s the head of all vampires,’ he said. ‘Aro is, on the surface, a very gracious and friendly vampire, but beneath that he is a tremendous threat.’

u know, if u think about it, look at the age gap for the volturi actors, the guy playing caius i sbarely in his 20′s n sheen is like in his 40′s. do u think this will effect how they will compare to eachother on screen visually??? but then again, make-up artists can do wonders.

This time, I think this actor is perfect to play Aro. I was upset they’d hire a young actor again and that’s not how I had pictured the Volturi, so imo this a bit older actor is perfect for the role. I don’t know him and his acting at all (never saw underworld) but at least physically already he fits the character.
Great choice, he is one of my faves, liked him in the first Underworld and the last one, Rise of the Lycans. He should easily carry off the part.

I am so glad others on her have seen his more serious roles. He is a great British actor. He has been in some great movies,The Queen,Frost Nixon,The Kingdom of Heaven,ect! Yes,he was great as Lucian in the Underworld Trilogy but he most importantly is a great talent that is now really starting to show in America! Love my Brits! I really hope this is true!

Oh My God . . . this is the absolute best news I’ve heard all bloody year! This is beyond perfect casting, I adore Michael Sheen and he’s going to be drop dead, suck your blood type, gorgeous in New Moon! If there’s someone screaming in the cinema when you see it . . . it’s just me.

Yeah bringing in some brand new talent would be good too. I like a mix of new and established though.
Forgot to mention, bringing on Sheen will also open the Twilight Saga up even more to a wider audience…that is probably why Weitz went with him.
truly, i really don’t know what to think of new moon. i hated the book (sorry all u team jacobs xD) but i think im gonna really like the movie, chris is making some really unexpected choices for the cast, i actually think hell do a beeter job then catherine, (sorry again) i thikn hes trying to capture a bigger audience and not make it just in the tween-teens area. i think hes gonna do a great job n i also think hes trying to make it more seriouse and romantic. Twilight was a good movie but seriously i found tht it was a bit choppy and missed alot of important scenes and they fell in love to QUICKLY! im mean they only had like 3 scenes to gether before the forest! wheres them just trying to be friends???? i dont understand why it would be such a hassle to make it a two hour movie like they harry potter ones! people would prbbly be more interested in it and also i think they forgot tht not all people have read the book and didnt explain it enough for those odd poepl…jkjk (ive read them all btw…12 times lol) oops, getting of subject aniways please comment on …my comment i guess lmao n tell me if u agree or disagree luv yall!

baahahahaa when i first read ‘michael sheen’ i thought it was charlie sheen, from two and a half men. that would have been horrible. so now, michael would be good, i think. i haven’t really seen anything with him…

I think he will do really good acually. He is old like aro and caius are supposed to be. With makeup and good acting…i think he can do a really good job. Really all of u are just now into rob when if u remember he was in Harry potter as well and his hair was the same but all u do is criticize his hair and the way he looks ! GREAT choice!! Aro is the leader and Sheen will do a great job. I am glad there are both known and unknown actors who are being cast for New Moon. Balance is better.
I also agree with EmilyNJ. People there isn’t anything in the books that specifies him as a 20-something frozen in time. When I read the books I pictured him as MUCH older, even older than Michael Sheen. Sheen is only 40, not in his 60′s or 70′s. He’s the perfect age to assert authority and reality to the role.
This is EXACTLY what I feared. I don’t think the new director has any faith in the actual book itself. He continues to believe he needs to bring in big names in order to spur an audience. The first movie was pulled together with a bunch of no names and gathered $70 mil in the first weekend. Now he’s paying this actor (not saying he’s a bad actor) $5 mil pounds for a 15 minute part. WT_?!!! The story line is going to sell the movie, the fan base alone (growing bigger and bigger daily) will bring about millions in the first weekend. It is an insult that Dakota Fanning and Michael Sheen are even needed to get attention. Sorry but I’m absolutely irritated. Not to mention the massive age gap in Aro & Caius… they were supposed to be similar. To be the vampire mafia, the Volturi should be more mature like Mr. Sheen and not still posess the baby face of a teenager.
