Los Angeles, CA April 22, 2009 — Summit Entertainment announced today that David Slade has been hired to direct THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE from a screenplay written by Melissa Rosenberg. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE, the third film in the studio’s TWILIGHT film franchise based on the Stephenie Meyer’s blockbuster book series, will be released theatrically in North America on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. The announcement was made by Erik Feig, Summit’s President of Production.
Meyer stated, “I am thrilled that David Slade will be directing ECLIPSE. He’s a visionary filmmaker who has so much to offer this franchise. From the beginning, we’ve been blessed with wonderful directorial talent for the Twilight Saga, and I’m so happy that ECLIPSE will be carrying on with that tradition.”
Feig said, “Stephenie Meyer’s ECLIPSE is a muscular, rich, vivid book and we at Summit looked long and hard for a director who could do it justice. We believe we have found that talent in David Slade, a director who has been able to create complex, visually arresting worlds. We cannot wait to see the ECLIPSE he brings to life and brings to the fans eagerly awaiting its arrival in summer of 2010.”
Filmmaker Slade came to prominence as a director for his work on 2006′s engrossing film HARD CANDY starring Academy Award® Nominated actress Ellen Page as well as directing 2007′s genre hit 30 DAYS OF NIGHT which opened to number one at the box office its first weekend of release.
In ECLIPSE, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger as Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life.

WOOOO!
I love new news, XD.
IM SO EXCITED
At first I was upset that they kept changing directors, but now that I know this guy directed 30 Days of Night, I’m completely okay with it because for one thing, I love that movie and for another, he’s had experience with vampires.
Obviously he’ll be working within the context SMeyer wrote, but this guy killed it in 30 Days of Night and I can’t wait to see what he does to Eclipse.
Congrats to David Slade. Exciting. Much love to cast and crew
They’re moving quickly!
If Stephenie is happy, I’m happy!!
Very awesome. I loved 30 days of night. The effects were good too. So he’s going to bring some awesome stuff during the fight sequences I hope.
Love this choice. Kudos Summit
I’m usually not skeptic about this type of news, but I am not going to lie that this is kind of making me nerv. I saw Hard Candy and it was ridiculously weird/strange. And I haven’t seen 30 but it doesn’t look all that great….. Ehh. I’m sure it will be fine though.
i think 30 days of night was a pretty good movie. but i still have no idea how david spade would be as a director for the next twilight movie. i know when it comes to the volturi and the new borns, he’ll make them down right frightening but I hope he doesnt make it too focused on all the scary aspects and forgets all the concepts of love and struggle through out eclipse.
i have to agree with mariel, im not judging spade, i just have my worries.
I don’t know it’s great he has experience but this is Eclipse it has romance not just the great fighting scenes to look forward to I’m sure he’ll do well but still alittle worried
First: I don’t mean to be such a nitpicker but @Jacqueline… It’s David Slade, not Spade. That would be extremely weird if David Spade directed ANYTHING. He is a comedian… Sorry. Had to point that out.
Second: I’m not gonna be too worried or concerned since I’ve seen neither of those movies but I’m just going to have to sit back and wait to see how he plays things out… Hopefully it will be for the better of Eclipse. M’just gonna wait and see…
(Wait a friggin’ long time! Yikes! I don’t know if I can contain myself til June of NEXT year… Hmmm… What to do with my time? Read Twilight, of course! Haha)
I think it’s great that David has directed a vampire film (30 Days of Night) in the past. So he’s more familiar w/working on something that has to do w/the concept of vampires.
hey i agree with jacqueline. i mean he is a horror/thriller director… that’s what we have seen from him.
i just really hope that he focuses on the angst-y love of bella between edward and jacob! i mean eclipse is my FAVE BOOK.
he better not screw up.. eclipse is that one book in the series which is the MAIN turning point of everything. it changed like EVERY freaking thing in the series. which of course led up to the ahem*unfortunate*ahem breaking dawn.
seriously, this is the part of the story when BELLA REALIZES SHE REALLY LOVES JACOB. this is like the moment of truth and the critical time for both of them.
DAVID SLADE (it’s not spade), don’t mess up ECLIPSE.
oh and he needs to focus on the ENGAGEMENT SCENE, WHEN JACOB TRIES TO KISS BELLA, THAT AWKWARD TENT SCENE, and, pretty much THE MALAISE of everything.
i’m all good with the fight scene though. no worries:)
Okay, I’m glad to have Slade on board. I really am. But, seriously, WHEN are they going to get rid of Melissa Rosenberg already!!!!!! SHE SCREWED UP THE FIRST SCREENPLAY, SHE WILL SCREW UP THE OTHERS! Jesus. Get RID of her already! PLEASE!
my bad, i meant SLADE!
Arh.
I wanna see who films the last film too
Talk about thinking ahead.
well i havnt seen any of his films so i hope the best from him
by the look of him he dosnt look like the guy thats all about romance which the first film did miss alot of.. kinda
who knows?
I deffo wanna see the engageement
cnt waait
200 days seems like alot..

THERE IS JUST SOMETHING I’M WORRIED ABOUT WITH THIS DIRECTOR….. I SAW HARD CANDY WITH ELLEN PAGE IT WAS A PRETTY DECENT MOVIE BUT….IT DIDN’T REALLY MAKE MUCH SENSE…..SO I HOPE HE DOESN’T SCREW OUR ECLIPSE UP BECAUSE IT’S MY FAV BOOK =/
I didnt like 30 Days of Night as a film but that was more the storyline…it was shot absolutely beautifully as was Hard Candy so Im really excited to see David Slade do Eclipse, I think he’ll do an amazing job.
thank god they decided on someone
i just hope he does this movie well, from the sounds of it he will… so yh, im really excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me just wants movie fast…
I haven’t seen any of this guys movies but I looked them up and ..WOW. I hope that he doesn’t forget that while this is a movie with vampires and werewolves it’s also a love story. That needs to be seen in this movie, not just the scary stuff. The last two books in this saga are my fav so PLEASE PLEASE DON’T SCREW THEM UP!! KEEP THE SCREENPLAYS CLOSER TO THE WAY SHE WROTE THE BOOKS!! and DON’T CHANGE the way the vampires look or the werewolves.
Congrats and I am happy he was chosen!
I haven’t seen either of the movies that he has done, would it be too much to ask to get a director that has more than a couple of movies under the belt, I mean think how much $ Summit is going to make off of this film. From what some of you have said he can definately do vampires, but can he do the romance? I hope so, it was also my favorite out of the series so I really really hope he does it justice.
I am SOOOO STOKED that David will be doing Eclipse! He did so good with 30 days of night!! That was a bad a** movie! I can’t wait to see what he does with it!
@ JACLYN
I think we don’t need to worry about any screw ups on Eclipse… I say this only because I know Steph will be right there to give creative direction. It’s her baby, so I’m sure she will make sure things turn out how they should. We just gotta hope for the best!! And I agree… Eclipse was a pretty amazing book!
eh… i guess hes okay. If hes cool, hes my kind of guy, but i hope he doesnt make Eclipse into like…. some wierd retro movie.
Dude, just make it good.
ok i dont like this at all but let me get my reasons out.
I really think Chris is going to blow us away with New Moon, making it way better then Twilight. But seeing some of David’s movies, the consistantcy between all of the Twilight series wont flow. Directors have their own minds and ideas.
I think they should have had four runner ups for directors for Eclipse, Chris being one, and decide who they want AFTER New Moon is put together. It would really suck if the series went ok, excellent, bad or in and direction. Seeing the Golden Compass, Chris will do well, hes got a vision and follows books to the up most best possible way. Guess we just have to wait this one out.
AAAHHH! I just googled 30 Days of Night, and it was about vampires! i never knew that it was about vampires….
I hope Davy dont mind reinventing his perspective on vampires.
crap. I just watched some clips from 30 Days of Night. Yeah. I’m really scared. but Edward Cullen will protect me.
=D
um. Now im having second thoughts.
He better read the damn books and get a pretty good clue of just how deep E&B’s relationship is. I think Chris will do phenonmenal with new Moon, with all the CGI and stuff. But, we also need the wolves in Eclispse, and dont forget that we also have the fight scene. dont leave out Bella trying to seduce edward, dont leave out bella realizing she loves Jacob, dont leave out anything really important! David, really, turn into a twihard, or you’ll never get the movie right.
And twilighters; only time will tell if New Moon, Eclipse, and (IM FREAKING PRAYING) breaking Dawn will be as good as we want them to be. We just need to keep our thirst filled with Twilight until New Moon arrives. In other words, watch twilight till you get sick of it becuase we dont have much else till they finish filiming.
Who agrees with me?
I agree with you POETESS
i loved 30 Days of Night and it was AMAZING!
so im pretty sure he will do fine in Eclipse, all we have to do right now is wait and focus on New Moon for now
They haven’t even released a New Moon trailer and they’ve already decided the director of eclipse…. ???
I don’t know about this guy, David Slade. Those two movies weren’t at all impressive. Eclipse is the absolute best of the series and they get some guy with a flimsy resume!? What’s up with that? Even worse, they continue to hire the same screenwriter who butchered Twilight. If Eclipse isn’t all it should be I will be asking for my money back. I have no interest in seeing the dastardly Breaking Dawn movie either. For me, the series should have ended at Eclipse with Bella and Edward’s wedding. I was so disgusted with Breaking Dawn that I threw it into my closet more than once, I couldn’t even finish it the first time around. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and read the whole series again and BD was still disappointing. I really hope they get New Moon right, a couple of the casting choses are questionable. Like the teenager they chose to play Caius, what are they smoking over there? Movie translations are never as good as the novels!
I read most of the comments above…and I just know only that I’m scared /nervous with those nervous ppl out there. I don’t even want to hold my breath for New Moon let alone now hearing about eclipse- I almost feel like I have to wait for it to come out on dvd before i watch it just to let the hype and excitment or fear and frenzy die down before I can watch it with any hope or love. I think I may have a little faith left in me that Weiz is doing the best he can…it’s just hard that after reading Harwicke’s directorial notebook – that you realise she had so much vision, and she was just as emotionally invested and had a really different perspective on things that I worry those other directors will miss – hence I agree with those who are expressing the sentiment that in all the brilliant action scenes that these directors are known for doing that i only hope for real that the essence of that love and emotional connection between bella and edward will not be lost. Of course we want a visually stunning movie – I suppose that is what ppl are expecting and especially if the movies are meant to be living up to our own imaginations, but what is a movie of eclipse if the key character relationships are not there to see — i just worry that it may not be carried off — that’s the hook – the hook of the book – the hook of twilight — the well told story of the deep angst and pain and love of edward and bella. Anyway I ramble – I ought to give Slade a chance — may watch his movies again – and I suppose we gotta have hope/faith — but what if its too much of the other characters and too much of wicked action scenes without our intense Bella Edward Jacob scenes? I know that’s where Catherine Hardwick really tried to make that Rosenberg script work….Catherine did a great job in my opinion..and watching the dvd deleted scenes and extended scenes you know why she did what she did….some of those extended scenes were great though! I’m really not happy about green screens if they’re used too much lol — as a last thing– twilight felt real.
UGH I LIKE CATHRINE HARDWICK BETTER SHE ACTULLAY HAS HAIR!
Wat the fuck u guys talking about..David Slade will absolutely do a great job on this film…I agree with the guy hu said BD sucked…well, whaddya expect from a bad writer like Meyer…if she were a good writer instead of this horny obsessed bitch…
I’m hoping Slade will bring something new to the table…establish twilight as not only a screen adaptation of the book but a film that stands alone…yall twilight fans will probably watch any film as long as it has Edward Cullen on it..
