As a new “Harry Potter” movie opens next week, the bespectacled wizard faces a new challenge: how to compete for the attention of a young audience that has been growing up—and is starting to prefer the angsty teen romances and cooler, edgier characters of the “Twilight” books and movies.
The film moves directly into territory where “Twilight” now rules. The sixth “Potter” movie, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” has a distinctly more grown-up tone than its predecessors and features a strong romantic plotline.
Hollywood marketing executives say that these days the “Twilight” franchise has influenced almost every studio marketing campaign that targets teenage girls. Some posters for the upcoming “Potter” film echo “Twilight”’s emphasis on romance. One features Harry and his crush, Ginny, gazing longingly into each others’ eyes, in a pose reminiscent of “Twilight”’s now-iconic image of its star-crossed lovers, Bella and Edward. Another shows Harry’s friend Ron with his girlfriend Lavender, while a jealous Hermione scowls in the background.

Honestly;; they weren’t very twilightey.
Harry wasn’t even touching ginny and hermonie was practically aghost in the back ground. Theres enough room for Potter and Cullen in this world.

I like both series but it will always be Harry Potter>Twilight for me. Also they should read the books before they comment, the HBP has romance in it.

Are you kidding? I’m 23 years old and I’m going with a group (very large group at that) of people who are all much older than me.I wish they would stop comparing HP to Twilight. They bare no similarities and even the writers’ styles are completely different. I’ll love them both until I’m dead.
Harry Potter has been around for along time. People aren’t just going to stop caring. Harry potter has SOME romance in it but They really shouldn’t try to match twilight. I don’t think the creaters of Harry Potter sould worry so much, just because everyone loves twilight, doesn’t mean that now Harry Potter is dead. I will always love them both. They’re completely different and everyone loves them for different reasons. I’m going to see Harry Potter and Twilight (hopefully) on the premier each time one of the movies comes out.
I’m so excited, I can’t wait for Harry Potter (just 5 more days). : )

i think its unfair to compare them though, because rowling wrote 3 more books (and will therefore have 3 more movies) which explains why her sales have been larger
im looking forward to both half blood prince and new moon, and im really interested to see which grosses more, but i think it will probably be HBP, just because the fan base is bigger
a) stop comparing them cuz they’re two totally different stories
b) to everyone who thinks that harry potter is dying down, think again. presales for half-blood prince are doing even better than transformers. and those are only presales.
c) why does it always have to be a competition? i loved hp way before twilight and it will always be my #1, but that didn’t stop me from reading the twilight saga and thoroughly enjoying it. please everyone, stop it with the bashing. they’re both phenomonal series.
im not taking sides. the twilight and harry potter novels are both great in their own right. and of course, if you’ve read all the harry potter novels, you would want to read something else that was just as exciting. and twilight was it.
im glad there’s people standing up for HP. I love twilight but I grew up with Harry. Harry Potter is an amazing series. Harry Potter isn’t trying to be like twilight, because, Hello! harry potter came first. Twilight is amazing but I will always stand as a faithful Harry Potter supporter

I never liked HP i mean i grow up with charmed. so the witches and wizards is really hard for me to grasp. i mean the wands, i c=grow up with powers coming from the body with no assistance, and witches are both male and female, and warlocks bad. and the naming of the holidays, i mean come on, if u are doing a fantasy world with magick, us the pagan names and not the Christianize names for them.
@Jacqulen , Harry Potter never stopped being #1. Show’s are seeling out like crazy. Plus the Harry Potter posters have nothing to do with Twilight. The posters have to do with the story line in the book. Harry and Gionny get into a realtionship and Ron is in a slight love triangle. This movie was suppose to be out in Nov., but WB pushed it back because of the success of The Dark Knight. No telling when these poster’s were made.

Ok I’ve been a Harry Potter fan since I was little and I’ve basically grown up with it. I started reading Twilight back in Jan. and have read the series like three times already, and I love it. I agree that there is TOTALLY enough room for Harry Potter and Twilight in this world, because let’s face people despite the new fad of Twilight(which I’m totally caught up in ;-D), Harry Potter is and will always be like a classic and they will probably be read for generations to come (and hopefully Twilight). But Harry Potter is basically an all ages book and Twilight is kind’ve mature, but fantastic don’t get me wrong. i just think that they are different stories and for people to shun HP and say twilight is like the HP series is wrong because both are written by really talented writers and HP (sorry people) will never become unpopular. Can’t take a side sorry I just love both too much!

Harry Potter and Twilight are actually two different stories. HP can’t be twilightish coz first of all, it came out first. And both movie are based on a novel.

cupcake: understand that many twilight fans were hp fans first. hp was what personally sparked my interest in fantasy. without it, i would never have picked up twilight. and personally, i’m sick of all the twilight fans bashing on hp. yeah, there are hp fans who don’t like twilight, but they aren’t as outspoken or as rude as twilight fans are. they generally keep their opinions to themselves. so i’m going to take a guess and say that more people are picking hp over twilight because they’re the people who are sick of this like me.

EXACTLY CULLENS #9 twilight fans are extremely rude in my opnion as well and I’m sick of them bashing on harry potter also. Well, first I would just like to say that I like both Harry Potter and Twilight. Secondly, I perrsonally WAY prefer the twilight series, but thats my opinion. Thirdly, I don’t think that HP should try and be like twilight. It just won’t work. People are treating this like it’s HP vs twilight or something, which it’s not- they are both very different and are (or should be) targeting different audiences. Sorry, that got kinds long! lol

Also Kate you rock. Harry Potter first came out in 1995 and Twilight came in 2005. So Harry Potter was here ten years before Twilight.

actually, twilight movie sucked. so i don’t see why twilight fans would be defending it. it was ok for a movie but for a book-movie, it wasnt twilight. an hp is the same. movies were ok untill the forth so i didnt like the last 2. but now when i saw trailer, i cant wait for hp 6 and maybe, this time, the movie is great. as for the books, twilight is amazing, but hp is amazing, too. so i’m with alan and kate, but i’m really not embaressed ofr being a twilight fan because i’m twilight and hp fan.
No offense, but Twilight is a book for hopeless romantics. The plots suck, all the books are repetitive and they are not that well written. People only like the Twilight books because they wish they had such a romantic guy in their own lives, there aren’t any plot twists or bittersweet things, it’s all black and white. In Harry Potter JK Rowling isn’t afraid to kill off characters, to always come up with new exciting details, etc. So comparing the series on literature terms- HP crushes Twilight… (in my opinion the Clique is even better then Twilight…sorry I just hate those books ((more now because of the annoying fans))). Speaking on movies, we all know which movies are better, not only by the difference in budgets but also the quality and depth of the movies. (although I do admit HP movies always seem to leave out crucial elements.. oh well).
Anyway, HP wins in all catagories.

On Rotten Tomatoes Twilight = 49%. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince = 86%. Twilight sucks all around. Twilight fans are just jealous of Harry Potter’s success. It is the highest grossing film franchise ever.
