USA Today announced that The Twilight Saga has broke a record previously held by the Harry Potter series:
Stephenie Meyer’s four-book Twilight series has sunk its fangs into USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list — with no signs of letting go. Meyer’s domination of the list for the past 12 months has smashed records that until now had belonged to J.K. Rowling.
Breaking Dawn, the fourth book in the teen-vampire romance series, entered the list at No. 1 on Aug. 2, 2008. Its sales and those of Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse, the first three books, have remained staggering.
This week, Meyer’s novels are Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7 on USA TODAY’s list.
Rowling, overall, has sold more books than Meyer — her seven-book series about boy wizard Harry Potter has 143 million copies in print in the USA, while Meyer has sold 40 million copies of her four books. But Rowling can’t match Meyer’s control of the list.
Breaking Dawn and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the two authors’ fourth installments, entered the list at No. 1, but Meyer’s series has had more staying power.

I would think its better to sell more books than be on the list longer. I enjoy both series but in all honesty twilight doesn’t hold a candle to the Harry Potter…

ok so if we say each “twilight saga” book sold 10 million copies.. and we ad an extra 30 so 4 books become 7 that’s 70 million meyer’s sold hypothetically, that’s half what harry potter’s sold.. stop trying to make Twilight better than Harry Potter.. I mean it’s an entertaining story but Stephenie Meyer has nothing on JK Rowling.. Twilight books are very linear, just a fast paced story from point A to point B… HP’s plot is so amazingly rich, and detailed, and there’s clues laced throughout all the books, each character has their own backstory, their own complexities, and they are believable.. the themes and messages rowling pays attention to, like segregation and racism, the parallels with real life, etc… anyway my point is.. there’s no comparison. For me anyway (I’d like to add that cause I guess everyone’s just going to shout at me now) I do like the twilight saga, don’t get me wrong…
Ummm,… The Harry Potter series has been out 10 years. Don’t know how long the Twilight Saga has been out, since I just read them so it does make sense that Twilight is winning in this category. Deathly Hallows hard copy came out in ’07, and for the paperback to be on the best seller’s list is amazing to me.
I couldn’t have said it better myself, lauren that’s EXACTLY what I’m thinking. Twilight is entertaining but it can never even compare to harry potter. anyone who has read Rowling’s series can tell that it is way more advanced, thrilling and complex in a way that twilight simply can not compare.
Look Twilight is a good read i really enjoyed it otherwise i wouldn’t be on this site, but come on Twilight is nowhere near in the same league as Harry Potter. J.K Rowling is by far a superior writer.
idk why you think HP is better just cuz its been out longer and so more people have bought it because of seeing the movies. You really only know which is better if they came out at the same time
Harry Potter has a much more complex story than Twilight. It also appeals to a much bigger audience than the Twilight franchise, thus, it would make sense that HP has a bigger fan base. Although I do love both series, I must say that the HP series still tops my list of fav. books.
Also about the movies deal, more people have bought Twilight after seeing the movies as well, so I really don’t think you can say HP is only “better” because movies came out. If that’s the truth, than Twilight is on the same page–or at least will be since they plan on making the entire series into movies too.
Twilight is only on the top because its the newer thing and it has a bigger fanbase only beacuse 90% of the fans are teenage girls.
HP has a WIDER fan bae, because anyone can read it and like it.
I like HP waaaay better, but its cool that Twilight saga is getting a good rep for its begining years.

Okay yes I am very excited about this news, and yes Twilight is currently my favorite book series- but partly because it’s been so long since I read Harry Potter. I mean 7 books are harder to re-read and Meyers are a faster pace. But yes I do agree that there is more depth in the Potter books – but I also disagree with the notion of only teenage girls reading it – I think any person could read it and enjoy it, especially if she makes midnight sun.
this is how you find out that the twilight sagas fans are mostly teenage girls.
i mean i love twilight but it my opinion it will never beat harry potter and if you think that i jus say this because its been there for years your wrong its because the hole plot of the story is better ,the deatails,the caracters, i mean i would rather be a wizard than a vimpier jaja jk =)
okay well if you actually read the rest of the article it says that it beat the record of being number one on the list for much longer than HP. it isnt whether twilight is better or harry potter is better, its just saying that twilight has been numer one on the list much longer. i know that harry potter is good, and twilight is good as well, they each have their own stories and ways to bring you into the book. They are different authors with different ways of telling the story.
let’s remember that twilight is what’s hot now. if it had been released at the same time as harry potter, HP would have DESTRYOED it. harry potter will ALWAYS be the best. 100 years from now, the harry potter books will be considered classics. they already are. twilight? no way. it’s just a phase.
Many people are comparing Harry Potter to Twilight and let me tell you, that’ getting completely annoying. And a lot of that comes from Potter fans. I have never read the Harry Potter books, nor do I intend to, or seen any of the movies, but just because it is “written” better, doesn’t mean that it’s better than any other book. Okay, Potter fans, if you had a choice to read Romeo and Juliet or Harry Potter, which will you choose? Of course you would read Harry Potter–but, wait…isn’t Romeo and Juliet WRITTEN better? Wasn’t Shakespeare considered and still is THE GREATEST AUTHOR THAT EVER LIVED? See? You don’t read a book simply because a chapter may be a little more detailed or if the grammar is correct. You read a book simply because of the story that it tells. I’m quite sure that if a sixth grader wrote Twilight it would still be big because of the genre: a love story (and vampires pouncing on each other). I’m not bashing Harry over here people, please don’t think that

So what i Harry Potter is written better than Twilight? If you ask me, the way the Twilight Saga is written has no affect on it’s staying power on the Book List. People don’t read books to check it’s correct grammar or if it’s written good, or if it’s detailed enough, either buy a dictionary and read it, or leave your English teachers to do the job for you.

ugh can you people please stop comparing them!! i love them both and for different reasons. yes it is true that rowling is the better writer, her stories are cleverer and her characters more complex. but stephenies story itself is equally as appealing because who doesnt like a love story? rowling has definitely sold more books, and the movies have been more popular, theres no doubt about that but her series really took off after the 4th book, and stephenie only has 4 books. what im trying to say here is that this is a twilight fan site so you people should stop bagging it, if you dont like it why are you here? why cant we just enjoy both series for what they are and STOP COMPARING THEM!!!
i have to disagree with all thhe people being teenage girls who read twilight, cuz even though my friends read, I no alot of older people who read it.

The Harry Potter’s are constantly evolving, leaning towards new things in its wizarding word constantly. Throughout every book Harry is trying to find a way to the end of the book, and there is always lasting adventure throughout each novel. When it comes to the seventh book, everything that you thought made sense was twisted, making you not be able to put down. Then, characters you loved DIE for what they started to fight for years ago…
Now, I love the Twilight series two, but this is why HP beats it for me.
In Twilight, Bella is baised about Edward. Which is fine in love I understand that, but it gets annoying when she says ‘How beautiful’ he is and ‘How could he pick someone like me?” on every page. Come on Bella, grow up and LOVE the fact that he loves you too.
Then, my biggest problem with the series is Breaking Dawn.
Bella gets knocked up by Edward (soo unrealistic) Bella drinks blood for the baby, the baby is born Jacob inprints on the baby the wolves had not enough backbone to attack the cullens and then finally there was no battle in the end of the book, leading to a completly useless and pointless read.
Someone needed to die! I mean, of course I dont want someone to die, but maybe if Rosalie got killed for protecting BELLA that you would feel a strong emotional pull towards her and regret any bad feelings to her you had at points? I dunno, thats just what I would have done.
Harry Potter’s characters are realistic. (even if it is in a SciFi world)
Twilight’s are not.
It doesn’t work to scramble a bunch of ideas up for a ending….
BUT I still love the twilight series, and I know you all are going to rip this into two but whatever. Its my opinion that HP rocks way more.

and to carlesme: it is the hot thing right now just like harry potter was the hot thing a couple years ago. the fact still reamins that 100 years from now, HP will be a classic while twilight will just be a thing of the past. so yeah, it’d better enjoy it’s time on top because it won’t last forever. harry potter will.

Why is twilight more popular right now?: Its newer. And like below, girls are hormoned crazied about hot guys.
Why girls SWOON for RPatz?: Not every book/movie is about the sex appeal in guys, duh.
Why there is more twilight posters plastered everywhere?: Again, its new. And teens obbsess over the lastest HOTTEST thing in the media right now.
And why twilight fans are more popular then hp fans?: Please! The ‘popular’ girls are just obbsessed with hot faces, and those geeks are probably the only ones who take in meaning for a actual book AND movie.
Twilight is fresh right now, everyone had the word out in the hallways, but HP has a WIDER fanbase, and a much better story.
When it comes down to that, HP TRAMPLES Twilight fans in the true meaning of FAN, because most Twilight followers are following someone else who likes twilight. Twilight’s fanbase is more of a cult then fanbase.

what kind of question is that? that has no influence whatsoever on the quality of the books and the stories… even more, that just proves a lot of girls are fans of twilight ONLY because the lead’s a beautiful man, and harry potter was popular in spite of the fact that there aren’t really any WOW guys in it.. it’s not about good looks.. (although i guess some girls do like dan, or any other actor in hp)
Twilight is popular now because it’s new… harry potter was popular when each book came out.. and there’s more hype surrounding rob and the rob-kristen “relationship” (poor people no one can leave them alone!!) than of the series itself…

Ok so twilight is a good story and it is popular because of the movie and Robert Pattinson but J.K. Rowling is an AMAZING writer. Her talent completely ‘eclipses’ Stephanie Meyer. Meyer knows how to deliver a story but her writing style is very basic and frankly, it isn’t noteworthy. Since when did twelve year-old girls become the authority on great literature?

Sorry Potter fans, but it sounds to me like you guys are complaining. There are a few people that I know that prefer the Twilight books even after they have read the Harry Potter books. So what if Harry Potter is supposedly so “good” that they’re making a whole amusement park dedicated to it? Twilight has a whole CITY dedicated to the series it’s a little town called FORKS.
Who cares? Harry potter fans aren’t gonna change Twilight fans minds or vice versa. Can’t we all just get along lol. My boss loves Twilight and i love Harry Potter but we are still friends. Peace and love people ( and no i’m not high lol)

I love twilight and all but, Harry Potter owns it on all aspects. And @Carlesme is right and wrong. Yes the popular kids go more the twilight route but at my school, EVERY GIRL READS TWILIGHT!!! Nerdy to popular everyone read or is reading it. And yes more of the “nerdy” crowd reads HP. But i read twilight and HP and im not nerdy nor popular. I’m kind of right in the middle. I have friends from both “crowds”.

hello!!! people have different opinions!!! thats what makes us different from everyone else. so what if people like harry potter better than twilight, or twilight better than harry potter, you dont go around smashing the books cuz they are a fantastic read either one. people are biased because they may liek something better, who really cares if the “popular” people read twilight, they are just poeple, and if you think ALL poeple who read harry potter are nerds then you think that poeple such as daniel radcliffe, and the other actors from those movies are nerds as well becasue im sure they had to read the books for their parts in the movie.
