Variety: Splitting Breaking Dawn into two films means expensive talks

The two-week $481 million worldwide gross of “New Moon” has vaulted Summit Entertainment into the big leagues, but it also has created a high-class challenge for toppers Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger.

They will likely have to cut a few big checks if they decided, as rumored, to split Stephenie Meyer’s final “Twilight” novel, “Breaking Dawn,” into two pictures. Sources said Summit has set Melissa Rosenberg — who wrote the first three films — to finish the series, but Summit has to clear several hurdles before Rosenberg learns how many more scripts she’ll write.

One of those hurdles is figuring out whether “New Moon” director Chris Weitz will respond favorably to overtures from the film company and the cast to shoot two more films, back to back.

    First comment…sweet…

So does this mean its absolutely positively OFFICIAL that Breaking Dawn will be made, its just a matter of how many Breaking Dawns? Or is it still up in the air as to whether they’ll go through with it or not?

    • anon:

its definitly being made, because theyve signed to do it. but yes, theyre just not sure how many their going to make it into yet :/.

and; i hope its two to be honest, one would make it rushed and it would end up missing allot (N) so, fingers crossed lol.

  • Vanessa:

They shouldnt complain about the money because the are making a lot of money off the first three movies including the DVDs so they should be able to create both movies

  • tiffiny:

Argh, I don’t even like Weitz work, why won’t they bring Catherine Hardwicke back, her work is so beautiful…so touching, so profound and so realistic. Have you ever seen The Nativity Story, I dare you not to cry when the baby jesus is born. She is amazing! She SHOULD be the one they are begging to do these films..I’m so irritated!

  • marcia:

Tiffany – thank you. Not Chris Weitz. NM did not have the passion and tension that Twilight had.

  • Renesmee:

I actually really liked New Moon, it made me cry at the parts Edward left Bella and Jake wouldn’t talk to Bella and when Edward came back. I think Chris Weits did a good job and he should be able to work on the Breaking Dawn(s). I also agree with Vanessa, they should have enough money from all 3 movies and all of the merchindice.
I really hope they make it into one though. I don’t want to see one half of the movie and then have to wait another 8 months to see the rest. I just won’t be able to do that. It’s Not Possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ashes:

I’ve been thinking since the first time I saw a New Moon preview that Weitz should direct BD if there is a movie for it. He’s brilliant, and I think he did an amazing job with New Moon. He actually cares about the book to movie process. If it weren’t for him the scene with Jacob and Bella in Bella’s room would not have been in the movie at all but he felt it was nessisary. As for your comment Marcia – How can you say that there wasn’t enough passion? You could see the sparks flying off Kristen and Taylor throughout all of their scenes, and of course Rob was perfect as usual. Cathrine Hardwicke’s Twilight was horrible compaired to NM. I know the budget was slim but some things were just unforgivable.

  • eiramlen:

IF it is as possitive for BD to be filmed GREAT! and if Chris Weitz accepts to direct the better, he did awesomely with NM, but i think that splitting BD into 2 films is completely unnecessary, it all can be summarized in a 3hrs film.

  • kathryn:

I thought twilight was great, chris did an awsome job of briging the warmth of jacob into the movie.
breaking dawn should be kept into one film! ther are lodz of long films out ther! so im sure us fans arnt gona mind waiting a little longer if the choose to shoot it in one. they wil rewin it if split into two… wev al read the book as one so the film should stay in one peice otherwise itl b to confusing and the fans wil be mad at the directors and writers ect.

  • Lunna:

Sorry Tifanny and Marcia, but Twilight movie sucked. Bad. Melissa’s script was terible and Catherine’s direction, unexistent.

BD should be split on two movies, Kathryn, or they’ll have to cut a LOT to fit in the screen.

And, please, they are earning a lot of money with the movies and the DVDs. It’s not like they can’t pay.

  • Tammy:

I feel Breaking Dawn can be 3 1/2 hrs and get the story right. But if it’s going to be like New Moon(rushed) they need to break it up in to two films. New Moon could have been a little bit longer to show more of bella’s pain. I just want to know why do they keep getting different director for each book? Maybe all three should work on Breaking Dawn!

  • Darlene:

Braking Dawn DOESN’T have to be split into two movies. There isn’t enough information to make TWO movies. Breaking Dawn lacked content so much, you could easily make a 5 minute movie out of it. They are only doing it to copy Harry Potter.

  • Alexandra:

Darlene- If you don’t like the books, which is pretty obvious by your comment, then why the heck are you reading this. They should really split BD into two movies. Its easy to find a splitting point where they could do that. And Eiramlen- They WONT make a 3 hr movie. Alot of fans of twilight are simply too young and impaticent to sit through that long of a movie and then non-fans wont see it either because it is too long. So clearly unless we want BD to be rushed like the end of NM it needs to be longer.

On another point Catherine Hardwicke was a terrible directer. At least for Twlilight. Maybe her other movies were good, I wouldn’t know. But in twilight there were absolutly some unforgivable parts that just made the rest of the movie laughable. Chris did a way better job and I pray that he decides to direct BD

  • eduarda:

:( weitz again? he was okay but can we give more directors a shot??

  • And, well, duh, of course its gonna cost alot of money. Duh. And I liked Chris. He did a really good job. Im excited for what David Slade is doing to Eclipse though. very very excited.

  • Leah:

Breaking Dawn is the climax to the incredible love connection between Edward and Bella. Chris did a wonderful job portraying the pain of separation that Edward and Bella felt in New Moon. So, I think he would do a great job with the movie that is all about the love that they share.
As for splitting BD into 2 movies, I don’t think it would do the job that Summit thinks it is going to do. 8 months between 2 parts of the same movie is too long and would make many fans angry. But 1 movie would either be too long or cut out too much.
Because Breaking Dawn is so important and the favorite of many fans, I think Summit should make 2 movies, but don’t leave the fans waiting for 8 months. Make the time inbetween 5 months or even less.

  • Darlene:

ALEXANDRA – For your information, I love the books a lot. But in reality, Breaking Dawn seriously doesn’t have enough stuff in it to be about 3 hours long. It’s all pretty much pointless ramble.

  • janett:

well i hope they do BD chris did an awsome job….catherine did an awful job….i didnt like her work…BD n eclipse are my fav books..n if dey fo BD i just hope they dont leave alot out.

  • Mary:

My husband doesn’t like the Twilight movies at all but said the Lord of the Rings books were just as long as Breaking Dawn and they made it into a movie. Sure 3 hours but it worked. He loved the Lord of the Rings books and the movies so obviously they got everything in that needed to be in. As for kids sitting through the movie, I think they would be fine. I’m not a kid but sitting through 2 hours of the first 2 movies so far has flown by! I think if you love Twilight you will sit through a 5 hour movie if you get to see all that you want. I just hope they make up their minds soon because if the ending of Eclipse is anything like New Moon we will be wanting to see Breaking Dawn the next day!

  • Debbie:

I personally think that C Weitz did an amazing job. The movie was beautiful. I liked Twilight, but I think it could have been way better. I agree with Mary that 3 hours would work. I mean really; do you think people are NOT going to go because it’s 3 hours long. Please. It is the final movie, the wedding/honeymoon/birth, Bella’s transformation, all the different vamps coming, and the possible battle. To paraphrase from another movie: “If you film it; they will come.”
