Taylor Lautner has dropped out of ‘Max Steel’ for ‘Stretch Armstrong’

Just last week we marveled at the sheer number of projects “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner had in development, and perhaps he was starting to feel the pressure too. After dropping out of “Northern Lights” earlier this week, the 18-year-old has parted ways with another project, “Max Steel,” based on the Mattel toy, reports New York magazine’s Vulture blog.

Sources say it was his “Stretch Armstrong” collaboration with rival toy company Hasbro that was the impetus for Taylor’s departure. According to Vulture, Taylor realized Hasbro was doing a better job with its movie properties than Mattel. To wit, the toy company has leveraged board games Candy Land, Battleship and Risk into high-profile projects and had earlier success with a couple small flicks called “G.I. Joe” and “Transformers.” Added one source, “When you sign up to make a movie with Hasbro, you know it will be in theaters a year later.”

“You can never be a character, that’s the one thing I’m sort of starting to realize,” he said. “I always thought that, you know, you look at ‘Raging Bull’ and stuff and think, ‘Wow, De Niro, he’s become someone else.’ And I was completely convinced that there is some way that you can actually become someone else for three months.”

He added, “I’m gradually starting to realize it’s more about performance rather than actually some kind of physical [transformation], and it’s taken me quite a long time to realize that.”

Being a vampire in Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” series certainly has its perks: In addition to possessing devastating good looks, immortality, and superhero strength, Meyer’s blood-sucking movie brood live in the most luxurious, slick, beautifully appointed house in town. This week, CNN Money revealed that the real-life Cullen family abode (or, at least, the estate-turned-movie-set for Robert Pattinson and company in the film adaptation of “New Moon”)—an immaculately renovated, modernist spread in West Vancouver—is currently on the market for a cool $2,998,000. That may seem steep, but it’s an outright bargain compared to the original price tag ($3.298,000) when the home was first listed by agent Jason Soprovich last November.

Are you pleased with the film?

Anna Kendrick: Oh yes, I’m so proud of it. I think I would say it’s by far my favourite film experience that I’ve had. It was the most fun and the most rewarding. The combination of this beautiful script and this beautiful character, with George Clooney and Jason Reitman on set, all day, everyday, was really fun. You couldn’t ask for anything more.

Is it fair to assume that the character you play is a long way from your own personality?

Anna Kendrick: Oh yes! But that was the fun part about it. Natalie does so many things that I would like to do and she is unapologetically who she is in a way that I wish I was. Sometimes there are things that you wish you would say or do and you think about it. And it was easy to transfer that into someone else. Personally, I generally avoid confrontation so it was a release to play Natalie because she’s not going to back away. And like I said, getting to yell at George Clooney was pretty cathartic.
