Confession: I was late to the Twi-game; friends insisted I would love it, but I have stacks of books just waiting to be read. My reading time is limited and precious, so I resisted. I didn’t engage in the vitriol that some people do (I have some fairly strong Nerd Cred, so I am not one to judge), but I was a bit confused; what exactly was the big deal? Then: “Wait, you are not coming to my Big Event to see the opening night of a movie?”   *folds arms and huffs*

So the winter holidays came, and I said fine. I will read Twilight.

I think you all know what happened next. It went a little something like: “GetAwayNobodyTalkToMeIAmReading”, which, by the middle of New Moon, devolved into snarls and frantic book clutching whenever anyone came near me.  I read all four books in less than two weeks. While I have always been an avid reader, this reaction was, shall we say, extreme. And I am not the only one, not by a long shot (right, everyone?). Thank goodness for the fandom, or I would be fairly certain I had gone irrevocably nuts.

I admit to being a little thrown by my own reaction, so all the wildly varying opinions of the Saga are really interesting to me. People love it, or hate it, or they can’t be bothered, or, even more inexplicably, they liked it just fine. That one sort of floors me. And maybe my bewilderment is the reason I get so riled when, upon discovering my obsession (it being an obsession, even strangers find out fairly quickly), people get that look that says, “I have you all figured out now. I know everything about you.” Errm…no you don’t, and it’s silly to think you do.  Once you get people talking, it seems that everyone has something they are geeky about, or some sort of Secret Shame. “I love Keeping Up With The Kardashians,” they will whisper, or blush furiously while trying to explain why the new Justin Bieber song is actually really good, no really you just have to give it a chance.

Honestly, people who are not passionate about something are usually pretty boring. I may be crazy, but it beats being dull.

I was the same way about Twilight. My cousin tried to get me to read it when it came out and my response was I'm not into vampires…That was all I knew about it. My husband actually picked out he movie to rent one night and I still didnt really want to watch it. Then after I watched the movie, I ordered the box set of books because I had to know what he was thinking. Once I opened the first book, my life has been turned upside down. I read all four books in Three days…no sleep, no eating, took them with me to the bathroom. It was ridiculous. Then as soon as I finished I was like AHHHH, so I re-read them so I could really enjoy them. It is the way he loves her that just draws me in..I could care less about the vampire thing. I could talk about the books for days. I love talking to someone who has actually read them and enjoys them enough to discuss them.

.ditto to both of you. and being passionate or thought crazy…who cares what people may think. Passion is being alive..and not dull. and Edward's love and focus on Bella being happy…..every girl wants that kind of devotion. and his family is willing to die to protect her!!! So very romantic and very inspiring kind of love!!

  • Scarlett71177:

    Amen, girl!

I can't imagine not feeling a part of something. I'm sure my fam thinks I'm crazy or immature, but I disagree- it's passion for something fun and exciting!

I'm glad I've met so many kindred spirits thanks to fandom participation. That's helped make my life full and fun.

Bonus Geek Cred to the first person to recognize where the title quote is from!

Midnight Sun, lol. One of my favorite quotes from it, actually.

I didn't even hear of Twilight until I saw the poster for the movie and became interested because I was a fan of Kristen Stewart. Even then, I didn't start reading the books until about September 2008, a few month before the first film came out. I was hooked right away (although it took me awhile to get through New Moon and Eclipse because I could only read so much at a time before becoming depressed). I sailed through Breaking Dawn (the best of the four) and became obsessed with the franchise in the months before the movie's release and have continued to remain in love with the saga ever since.

  • Martha:

My experience began with a young friend inviting me to the showing of "New Moon" during the Thanksgiving Holiday… Casually, on the way home, she stated that there was a "Twilight" movie… and that there were books! I WAS HOOKED, I WENTOUTAND PURCHASED THE TWILIGHT MOVIE, ALL OF THE BOOKS AND MADE A DEPOSIT ON NEW MOON… I AM NOW A DIEHARD TWILIGHT FAN! Thank you to Stephanie Meyer and the cast and crew of the Saga, I will be devoted for all time to this wonderful love story and all of the characters…

My first reaction to Twilight was that it was the stupidest thing in the world. Since it was stealing my friends away from me. I refused to have anything to do with it. My friend convinced me to read it and got Twilight for me as a gift. I read it and was instantly in love with it. After that I knew what and why everyone was in love with it. I am OBSESSED with Twilight Saga. There is nothing that can ever compete with such a story.

  • vamparilla:

Once I opened the first book I fell in LOVE! That's all it took, and I was hooked! I will never forget how I felt the first time I saw Edward on the big screen! I hope it never ends!!!!

  • PinkKitteh:

Exactly, only my nerd cred was seriously risking some tarnish due to the overwhelming number of online Twi* references I wasn't getting. That annoyed me out of my anti-Twilight funk. After all, if Stephen King hated on them as 'lacking all literary merit' (then again when was the last time HE wrote anything worth reading? Oh yeah, before he made his first bazillion buck movie!) So I finally paperbackswapped the first two. I was Hooked. It took me less than a week to read everything, and rent both movies. While hubby was out of town, of course. I could hardly admit my one shameful 'girlie' obsession. But my constant need for a fix was becoming more obvious. So I confessed, and swore to taper myself off if he'd postpone the intervention. Another month and I had reeled him into watching Twilight on the free OnDemand (that first taste is always free) now we're reading the books aloud. I think the ungrateful bas$#%@ is Team Jacob.

I was first introduce to twilight by a reader's digest journal in which a girl asked aunty about her obsession with Edward. And I wished I can get and read those books. Then I had a great chance to ask a bro in Singapore to buy me the book and it took 2 months to get the book in my hand in Myanmar .Then, wow, I'm a big fan since then.I'm sooo in love with the saga.I got New Moon a month later and had to wait extremely long 7 months (which seem like forever) to get Eclipse and B.D.That'sa total 9 months.I am an obssessive Twilight fan right now. And thanks so much for fansites for being able to know there are lots and lots and lots of twihards like me. As for a person who live in a town where there is so little people who knows and loves Twilight, it's a great pleasure to talk of my love for twilight to people who understands very well.

  • Joany:

OMG!!! I lost my geek cred with my friends. They thought I had no hope left. . . That is until I started evangelizing with the books. It spread like the plague.

The first time I heard about the books was in 8th grade. I saw one of my friends reading it and how she was obsessing over it. My thoughts back then: she's crazy. Then I heard that it was being made into a movie and I thought that it better have been that good. I convinced my mom to buy me the book because she never likes to buy me any books. Anyway, suffice to say I became a devoted member on October 15, 2008. Since then I can't have proper conversation with anyone without including something from the Twilight Saga. I've read Twilight seven times, New Moon four, Eclipse six, and- remember how I said my mom doesn't like to buy me books?- my recently acquired copy of Breaking Dawn for the second time. If I had more time, I would read them an infinite amount of times.

So yeah, I'm just grateful that there are sites like these out there so I can function properly.

You’re not asleep, and you’re not dead. I’m here, and I love you. I have always loved you, and I will always love you. I was thinking of you, seeing your face in my mind, every second that I was away. When I told you that I didn’t want you, it was the very blackest kind of blasphemy. — Edward Cullen, New Moon | Chapter 23
