I grew up on Harry Potter. It was my entire childhood. But, when Twilight came around, I was completely hooked. I can't chose which one is better or not, but… I think the Twilight BOOKS are better, and the Harry Potter MOVIES are better.

I LOVE both series. I'm not "favoring" either, I'm just doing my best to see them both for what they are. Both series are incredibly good. People say that you can't compare the two stories because they mean that both ARE really good. However, taking that statement literally, it is completely possible to compare them. Both books are greatly successful and famous fantasy series that are compelling, original and valuable. However, Twilight is a fantasy while Harry Potter is a reality within a fantasy. The Twilight plot-line is grabbing, but predictable. The Potter plot-line is grabbing and unpredictable. Harry Potter relates to human nature, while Twilight relates to human potential. In terms of story, they are incomparable because they're both fantastic. In terms of technique, I think Potter is favorable.

All in all, I see Harry Potter as a classic story that speaks to all ages, genders, cultures of people, etc. Much like Shakespeare, J.K. Rowling understands people and how they are and what they are able to achieve. I think that her story will also be one that transcends time and will remain a very successful and classic fiction. I see many classic elements of Twilight as well, but I think that it's success is something more of a fad. Unless people begin to focus on the substance and spirit of the story, I don't think that it will remain this popular forever. The movies especially.

The Potter movies were different because the substance or core values of the story were very clear throughout the books. Then, the focus did not become the magical fantasy world that was created, but instead the loss, love, warmth, happiness and struggle. The movies had their weaknesses, yes. But overall, they each were became what the books were because the values were not confused with the fantasy. The plot line of the books also made it incredibly good for a movie because of the great amount of suspense. As an audience member you can empathize with Harry, with Ron and Hermoine. You understand because their struggles and happiness are all things everyone has experienced at some point.
Harry Potter is a story of a person who has to rise from the ashes and be strong defender of good by overcoming bad (internally and externally). We can all relate to that because, that's life. Each of us have to find our own way to stand up and move forward on our own path in a presumably good way. That's basically Harry Potter in a nutshell. Twilight is a story of two people who have such a devoted love to each other, that despite all of the huge gulfs that mean to separate them, they find a way to not only be together but to value the other in such a respectable way that they are truly united. This is something we all want. It's something we hope for, dream of and aim to achieve. However, there aren't many relationships (of any capacity-romantic, friendship, family…) that constantly maintain that level of selfless and giving love. Because it's not exactly human nature to be constantly selfless and giving and self-sacrificing. Especially in terms of romance. But it's what most of us want and hope for. That's why the Potter movies are (in my opinion) more successful than the Twilight movies. Because it's so much easier to make into a real, live-action movie…because the story is so real.

Harry Potter has so many vital elements to it. It's such a complex, yet simple series. And those are the stories that are identified as great over great lengths of time (Shakespeare is one example). There are small details that are touched on in the first book that become hugely important to the plot in the last book. There were almost no loose ends. There were incredible struggles, real losses, real heartache and sorrow and pain throughout the books. Nothing about it was predictable. Almost every major moment in the last book had my head reeling…I didn't see any of it coming (well, except perhaps Harry killing Voldemort). The WAY the Potter story is what sets it apart from the Twilight story. Potter was subtle and intuitive and curious…like a great puzzle. Twilight was beautiful and compelling and wondrous…like a great painting or piece of artwork. So when it came time to turn the books to movies, I feel that Harry Potter was much more endearing that Twilight.
Because the elements that are generally seen as great in Twilight was the face and fluff of it, that's what was produced when it was put on screen. The beauty of the characters, the effects, the romance, the little details became the focus. That's probably because that was most of the focus in the book too, because it's a real fantasy…not many really REAL substance is apparent on the surface. However, they are there. It just takes an eye that looks to the core of the story, the spirit of it, how it correlates to human nature to make it work. That substance was overlooked while transitioning to the movie because of the focus on the fluff and because it was hard to see. I felt the Twilight movies went through all the motions of the story, but never became the story.

That's why I see both series as incredibly strong and fantastic, but I also see their weaknesses. Twilight has so many values about relationships and about growing up, maturing, making choices and loving people…friends and family alike. However, it's also very blunt and somewhat predictable (in terms of plot-line). It's a good story that draws you in and doesn't want to let you go until you stop reading, but in the end nothing happened that wasn't COMPLETELY unexpected. There were a lot of loose ends, and very little risks. Every single good character had a wonderful happily ever after (which is not a bad thing-i like happy endings!) which is what made it somewhat predictable. Sure, characters struggled and had a hard time, but there's no REAL struggle…no real loss or agony like there is in real life. It's all very feel-good fantasy, which is a great thing for a book, but makes it difficult for movies…unless you fully understand and grasp the elements of it that are real. This is where I think the Twilight and Potter series differ considerably. The movies.

It's interesting to me the things that were focused on to be debated about…all of the surface looks and feelings of things. People love these series not just because of the "dreaminess" or good looks or romance or "feel good" feelings but because there is a spirit about each story that people connect and relate to. There is a substance behind the face of the books that speaks to people. That's what people like. The fluffiness of the romance or the special effects are just icing on the cake.

Twilight is a great series. I LOVE the books and have read them over too many times to count. It's incredibly entertaining and compelling. There are many wonderful values in it. However, Harry Potter is a brilliant series. There aren't many stories that can top it, and twilight is not one of them. Stephenie Meyer is an incredible story-teller with amazing raw, natural talent. But J.K. Rowling is too. I think though, that J.K. Rowling has a little bit more than just talent…I think she has a gift.

ok..i agree with alot of the coments but when it comes to the fan base of
each series just because harry potter so called "started the midnight book releases" twilight came out a while after harry potter so that cant really count so i guess u can say that they r different book serieses with different strong fan basses and they are both loved very mutch:)
