Midnight Sun

September 2008 Update:

As some of you may have heard, my partial draft of Midnight Sun was illegally posted on the Internet and has since been virally distributed without my knowledge or permission or the knowledge or permission of my publisher.

I have a good idea of how the leak happened as there were very few copies of Midnight Sun that left my possession and each was unique. Due to little changes I made to the manuscript at different times, I can tell when each left my possession and to whom it was given. The manuscript that was illegally distributed on the Internet was given to trusted individuals for a good purpose. I have no comment beyond that as I believe that there was no malicious intent with the initial distribution.

I did not want my readers to experience Midnight Sun before it was completed, edited and published. I think it is important for everybody to understand that what happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being. As the author of the Twilight Saga, I control the copyright and it is up to the owner of the copyright to decide when the books should be made public; this is the same for musicians and filmmakers. Just because someone buys a book or movie or song, or gets a download off the Internet, doesn’t mean that they own the right to reproduce and distribute it. Unfortunately, with the Internet, it is easy for people to obtain and share items that do not legally belong to them. No matter how this is done, it is still dishonest. This has been a very upsetting experience for me, but I hope it will at least leave my fans with a better understanding of copyright and the importance of artistic control.

So where does this leave Midnight Sun? My first feeling was that there was no way to continue. Writing isn’t like math; in math, two plus two always equals four no matter what your mood is like. With writing, the way you feel changes everything. If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn’t dovetail too well with the original story. In any case, I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.

I’d rather my fans not read this version of Midnight Sun. It was only an incomplete draft; the writing is messy and flawed and full of mistakes. But how do I comment on this violation without driving more people to look for the illegal posting? It has taken me a while to decide how and if I could respond. But to end the confusion, I’ve decided to make the draft available here (at the end of this post). This way, my readers don’t have to feel they have to make a sacrifice to stay honest. I hope this fragment gives you further insight into Edward’s head and adds a new dimension to the Twilight story. That’s what inspired me to write it in the first place.

I do want to take a moment and thank the wonderful fans who have been so supportive of me over the past three years. I cannot begin to tell you how much each of you means to me. I only hope this note will stop all the confusion and online speculation so that the Twilight universe can once again become the happy escape it used to be. After this incredibly busy year, I am now focusing on spending more time with my family and working on some other writing projects.

    i so hope she finishes it it's online and i read it but it stops before he shows himself in the sunlight ugh it's soo hard to deal with. it's very interesting to hear twilight from edwards point of view to know wat he went through and espicially to get to know the cullens more than just jessica's or bella's point of view u become closer to the characters and to know that alice already knows that bella will be a vampire and she's seen the wedding and everything. its great. and the thing is alice knows all of these things and edward is trying so hard to prove her wrong and deny the visions but ends up losing and giving in anyway. its intense and heartbreaking all at the same time plz stephenie finish the book.

      I agree with you there…. but i thought i read somewhere that she might continue with Midnight Sun after the production of Breaking Dawn is done. id love to see what Edward meant by his quote in New Moon…. "Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. very dark, but there were stars- points of light and reason… And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn't see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything." I love reading from edwards point of view and getting to see a lil more into the rest of their personalities a lil more…..

    i read the draft last year and i loved it!! I was so absorbed into the story that i didnt notice any mistakes. i wish SM could finish the book or even just write a little bit more-a couple more chapters or something. When i finished reading it, I felt like I was hanging on the end of a string because i want to do know the rest of Edwards story. Who else felt the same way??

    We should start like an online petition so that SM can see that we the fans, want her to finish MS and that we will go buy her book as soon as it's out. I think this book is better than Twilight. It makes us see not only through Edward's eyes but many other characters what is going on in the story. I am getting ahead here, but i would love to see what Edward did when he left Bella in New Moon.

      I'm sure MS would be am incredible read. I, personally, would love to read about Edward's feeling throughout Eclipse when Bella is trying to decide for sure, what it is that she wants. Edward's becoming more humanized by his relationship with Bella. It would be nice to understand what exactly his feelings are throughout that whole story. We see the exterior of his emotions in the movie but not what's lying underneath. Also, Breaking Dawn would be another great read from Edward's POV. His POV is like no other. It's nice to see a more in depth side of the love triangle. I love a good love story.

      after i read the partial draft, i started thinking about what edward was thinking in new moon before he left after he left when he was about to come home…when he thought Bella was…dead

      than i thought about how JACOB was feeling and thinking, what if they told New Moon from HIS point of veiw! that would be awesome!

    Please continue to write Midnight Sun. I would be devastated if you don't. I have read all the books and Breaking Dawn twice, it's my favorite. I am a 12 year old Twilighter and I love Edward. I have not and will not read the draft or Midnight Sun because i love surprises. I refused to watch the first movie when it came out because at the time i was not finished reading the book. After that i read the books as fast as possible and have seen all the movies so far. I am ecstatic for the last movie but since it's going to be in 2 parts I will have to wait longer. Anyway, please continue writing?

    WOW!! Midnight sun is an amazing book, I really love hearing Edwards side of the story because its so much different from Bella's. It's also cool to hear his side because he can read minds, so you get to hear other peoples thoughts. It made me realize that I really don't like Jessica as much as I thought. lmao. :D

    I'm sorry to hear about the intrusion that happened to you. As for reading the rough draft, that's not going to happen. I would rather wait for the finished story. I understand putting it up on a shelf becuase of what happen. But I also hope that you will feel the desire to finsh the story. I was brought into the twilight world becuase I wanted to know what my 11 yr old niece was reading & why she was so excited. I loved the story so much that I am buying my own set so that I can read it again and so that I can add them to collection of stories on my book shelf. I love to share my books with future readers in my family. My niece and I will have discussion about being part of Team Edward & Team Jacob. So anyway, I hope and look forward to reading Midnight Sun. Thank you for all the hard work that you do.

    at first i didn't want to read it, i was going to wait. then i read the firat chapter, then the partial draft. i got to the end and couldn't understand why i couldn't scoll down anymore! :) any way it has to be the best book ever (don't say it isn't that eclipse/ breaking dawn was better because my mom woun't let me read them wah!) so I can't wait for it to come out. i just know that stephinie woun't let us down.

    p.s. i heard this monday in honor of Bella's Birthday, Sept 13, Eclipse is reshowing!!!!!! i was afraid i would have to wait ANOTHER month to see it again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    There are some fans who are terminally ill and may never ever get to read midnight sun. Stephanie should finish and publish this book for the sake of her fans. In fact, I would love to read about Edwards point of view on every book, there is so much more in this series than just midnight sun. The story is far from over.

    OMG i just finished reading twilight for the first time eva!!!!!!!!! Than i watched all the movies and became obsessed with twilight saga!!!!!!!! Although my dad dosnt want me reading or watching twilight, i cant help mself!!!!!Now that i've read Midnight sun i am now officially hooked the twilight saga. I have never loved any series like i love this one. My friends and mum(not dad) must be sick of me consonantly talking bout it. i love it and i'll be disappointed if i finish the series and have no more to read!!!!!     Stephenie, I truly appreciate these books as they have helped me survive a very difficult engagement break-off. The Twilight Saga helped me process my emotions; I thank you for authoring hope in these books. I apologize that someone posted Midnight Sun illegally; I have not read the rough draft online and I refuse to. Please, please, please continue with your incredibly successful series and finish/publish Midnight Sun. It would truly mean the world to me. Thank you.

    I have fallen in love with these books they are all so wonderful. But, I have to say that it would be a complete shame if Stephenie does not finish Midnight Sun. I understand that someone made a horrible decision to post the rough draft of the book. But to not finish it would be a crime. I read the first chapter and I really want to read all of Edwards feelings. It really helps to bring together the understanding of the depth of his love for Bella. It is a story worth telling even if the first part of the book was leaked. Her fans are all pulling for this book to be completed, I think that alone should be reason enough for the book to be finished. Not to mention it must keep playing over and over in her head waiting to pour out. :} I know that the 4 books keep replaying in my mind and mixing in with the movies while I dream. lol

    Seriously, they are wonderful books and I am very happy that I had the chance to read them.

    I dont know is it me and my stupid speculations but it seems to me like Meyer postet the book online by herself after she got tired of writing it. Maybe it is just me. Enyway I readed all the books…actualy first I saw the movie and I fel in love with whole twisted and new idea of vampires.Ofcorse after reading books I barely can watch the movies, but from time to time I do like visualise charackters from the books that I red already lots of times . And the first book I red was midnight sun. Then after I finished it I started from the first book at the line where it finishes in midnight sun. I was easier to get over the fact that midnight sun will be never "finished" and released, but when u think abouth it where should it had stoped? This book has already (unfinished) 264 pages… abouth same amount as the first 3 books and it was only half of the "twilight". Breaking dawn has double the pages so how many years meyer was supose to sit at the midnight sun (series?). Thats where from my speculations comes…she wrote midnight sun 264 pages and after she saw that its not even half of "twilight" she just stoped. Midnight sun was the best book of all twilight saga series. It gives you the whole idea how Edward and other realy are. I'm not only talking abouth Cullens but also abouth everyone from books, like how twoface was Jessika or how truly nice was Angela Weber, how increadibly Edward loved Bella and what kind of torture it was to him to be with her and on the other side how happy he was. From all the books it wasnt posible to gather whole information. Thats why I sugest for people( mostly for Edward fans) to read Midnight sun first-to get the idea, to see deep in everiones charakter..to fell in love with Edwards amazing mind and when the book ends and you read the other ones from where it ended you still gonna keep the same feeling to know everyone way better and you gonna admire Edward even more by knowing how it feels for him. From my point of view this book is compleet, because it was written to get better Idea of every charakter in twilight books and that you learn from those 264 pages. Big thanks to Stephanie for amazing work and lets hope the rest of the movies will be closer to the books.

    P.S. I said thaks for 5 books because I didnt red "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner " .the Eclipse novel has nothink to do with love story that I love from twilight saga. But I will read it eventualy because of Cullen family peaces in it and Villans that was against them and Bella….

    Wait a minute here…MS is the best draft. Are you guys thinking of a MS movie? Stephenie and others may think that the cast of characters are done playing these parts. Steph may feel she has done her job and the end is the end. I can''t see Robert or Kristen would want to go backwards. We would love to have all the books from Edwards POV., but movies are out of the question! In my view SM has already made her financial killing. DON'T YOU THINK??????????

    I know, it sucks. But I love Stephanie Meyer, and out of respect for her, I REFUSE to read Midnight Sun and I will not bother her about it.
    You all should do the same.

      I totally agree with you. Steph needs space people! and you need to give it to her. like Mandycullen05 said "WE WANT IT FINISHED. TO DO THAT, as she said above, she is going to wait untill people forget about it" I think we should listen to that little piece of advice, and stop punishing her for not finishing it and start hunting the person who leaked the whole thing like james did with bella.
