Okay then... here you are
Chapter 26
Jake spent the next twenty minutes teaching Bella the theory of how to ride a motorcycle. I doubted it would help when she got on it. I sat on the end of the truck like they do in old movies and swung my legs and generally watched as Bella fell in love with Jake. Well, I could see it going that way. I felt a familiar stab of pain shoot through my chest as I thought about how I'd just eventually wither and die; alone and old. Well, maybe not old. God, how I miss Carlisle and his tests. I felt my eyes water, and brushed them away carelessly. I could hear Bella was about to let go of the clutch, smiling I stood up and practically danced over to Jacob, who had backed off.
"You want me to let go of the grenade?" Bella sounded astonished, as if she wasn't expecting that.
"That's how you move, Bella. Just do it little by little."
Bella began to loosen her grip, but instead gasped,
"Oh!" and her hand fell off the clutch.
The bike buckled, and fell on top of her. The engine growling to a stop.
"Bella?" Jacob jerked the heavy bike off her with ease. Seriously, I was going to pick up some tourist maps and begin to look for a gym in La Push, these guys were really strong. I mean, Jacob didn't look that muscular. But neither did I. But I was telekinetic. Difference. "Are you hurt?"
“Bells?” I shook her shoulder.
"I'm fine," She mumbled. What was going on with her? One minute she's all fired up, the next it's like she's seen a ghost.
"Did you hit your head?" he asked.
"I don't think so." She shook it back and forth. "I didn't hurt the bike, did I?" I laughed,
"No. You just stalled the engine," Jacob said, interrupting my laughing. "You let go of the clutch too fast." I nodded at her, as if I knew all about it. Which, in theory, I did.
"Let's try again." What?! Someone was liking adrenaline.
"Are you sure?" Jacob asked, he was looking after my sister, a warm smile spread across my face.
"Positive."
Bella decided she was going to try and kick-start the bike herself. It took a few tries, and I found myself leaning against the truck for half of it. Marvelling at how Bella and Jacob fit so well together. He was her opposite, but it worked perfectly. Like chemistry.
Suddenly the bike roared and I paid attention. Could she do it this time?
"Easy on the clutch," Jacob reminded Bella, although I doubted she'd forget after her last experience.
A tight smile appeared on her lips. She looked as if she were in pain, but enjoying it. Masochist much.
"Ease off slowly," Jacob encouraged her.
"I will," She sounded determined. Maybe I was reading a bit too much into this, but a small frown appeared on her face.
Suddenly, Bella was zooming along. She wasn't going very fast, maybe thirty miles per hour.
“You go girl!” I yelled after her, but she seemed distracted. She was approaching a turn when I realised Jake hadn't told her how to turn.
“You idiot.” He looked down at me with surprise. “You didn't tell her how to turn!”
"Brakes, brakes," I heard Bella mutter in the distance. She must've slammed down on her foot brake, because the car flipped her into a tree and landed on top of her. My throat burned. She was bleeding.
“Damn.” I muttered under my breath and hoped on Jacob's bike behind him, my teeth clenched tightly together. It was as if I was swallowing matches, but my saliva didn't extinguish them. I was so thirsty. We reached Bella and jumped off the bike quickly. I caught it with my head and lay it down softly, not needing a messed up piece of metal to deal with now. Jacob didn't notice.
"Bella!" Jacob yelled, I stayed back a few paces, to be safe. I hated it, the uncertainty, the knowledge that I could lose control and kill her. I was a monster.
God, I was turning into Edward.
Pain shot through me. Why? Why did he leave us? Alone and scared and lonely?
"Wow," She murmured. Wait, wow? She's bleeding and she says wow? My sister has issues.
"Bella!" Jacob was crouching over her both protectively and anxiously, it reminded me of someone. "Bella, are you alive?"
"I'm great!" She seemed to mean it but as she stood up we could see the blood trickling down her head, she flexed her arms and legs before responding. "Let's do it again."
"I don't think so." If I was in any laughing mood, I'd have laughed. But if I opened my mouth then I might kill her. "I think I'd better drive you to the hospital first." I inhaled, needing air, damn, the vampires didn't need air, they had it easy. Flames shot down my throat, it hurt badly. I best go and hunt tonight, this was my punishment for pushing it too far.
"I'm fine."
"Um, Bella? You've got a huge cut on your forehead, and it's gushing blood," Well, Jacob was observant.
Bella's hand shot up to her head.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, Sophie! Jacob!"
"Why are you apologizing for bleeding?" he wondered. 'Because it feels as if someone is burning me alive from the inside' I felt like informing him. But instead I let him pick her up and help her walk over to the bike. Breathing through my nose all the way, not that it helped, it burned either way.
I hopped on the red bike that was lying where Bella had fallen off it and kick started it.
Wow, I guess theory does work when you're not Bella.
When I reached the truck Bella mouthed a ‘Sorry’ at me, and I nodded tightly. All my fault. I was a monster. I should’ve left town with the monsters. I’m so stupid. I noticed Jake looking at me; he was holding open the door. I had to get in. And sit next to Bella. With a head wound. And I was part vampire. This would be fun. Not.
I climbed in the truck holding my breath, wondering what would happen if I fainted. Would my throat still burn? I wonder if I can faint. Probably not.
"Okay, let's get you in the truck." Jacob said, his arm was wrapped around Bella’s waist.
"I'm honestly fine. Don't get worked up. It's just a little blood." A little blood? Was she insane? Oh yeah, I forgot, she was.
"Just a lot of blood," Jacob seems to agree with me on that one, although, I doubt he wants to eat Bella.
"Now, let's think about this for a second," She began when he got back in the car. The burning in my throat seemed to have reduced. "If you take me to the ER like this, Charlie is sure to hear about it." Of course, Bella would be worried about what Charlie might say. I shook my head, slightly annoyed that I hadn’t had a go on the bikes.
"Bella, I think you need stitches. I'm not going to let you bleed to death." I was beginning to think Jacob and Bella made a perfect match more and more. If only she would open up enough to let him get that close.
"I won't. Let's just take the bikes back first, and then we'll make a stop at my house so I can dispose of the evidence before we go to the hospital."
"What about Charlie?"
"He said he had to work today."
"Are you really sure?"
"Trust me. I'm an easy bleeder. It's not nearly as dire as it looks." They drove, at least I wouldn’t have to endure the hospital, that wouldn’t be funny. With the blood bank and all the sick people and the ER and everything. I’d lose control. Bella seemed as lost in thought as me, although, the sadness in her eyes told me she was remembering something she tried very hard not to. She flinched. Jacob noticed,
"You still okay?"
"Yeah."
"By the way," he added. "I'm going to disconnect your foot brake tonight." I grinned, I couldn’t help myself, and Jake was perfect for Bella. I mean, it wasn’t as if Edward was coming back, and if he did, I doubted she would go back to him, I mean, even Bella wasn’t that stupid. Right?
When we arrived at the house, I sat on the sofa with Jake as Bella ran upstairs to get changed.
“I’m staying here.”
“Why? You don’t seem to like the blood.” Good observation.
“It makes me feel sick, it must be a family thing.” That was actually a nice lie.
“Oh.” He was worried about Bells, I could see it in his eyes.
“Jake?”
“Mhm.”
“What’s going on with Sam Uley?”
“I wish I knew. I really wish I knew.”
“Do you still think of me as your little sister, Jake?”
“Yeah, why?” He ruffled my hair, trying to lighten the mood, I wasn’t letting him do that without a promise first.
“Promise me something.”
“Anything.” He regretted the word the second it was out of his mouth, I could see that, but it was too late now.
“Promise me that you’ll tell me what happens when it happens to you.”
“When what happens to me?”
“Whatever Sam thinks will happen.”
“How did you...?” I don’t know what he saw in my eyes, whether it was my knowledge of scary stuff, or just the fact that I was a freak, and I was tired of it too. But whatever it was, he stopped and said simply, “Sure, sure. I promise.”
I hoped it was true.
I also hoped it wouldn’t happen to him. But I doubted that.
When Bella came down she looked far better. Then they left and I was on my own. I could smell the blood upstairs, in the laundry basket, where she must have put her top and jeans. I went upstairs, each step a struggle. I had no idea what I was doing, all I know is that it can go two ways from here, I’m going to lose control and lick the blood on her shirt and freak out and go hunt people, or I’m going to put it in the washing machine.
I paused outside the door, deciding.
The Cullens had long gone, taking their lifestyle with them. What was to say I had to follow it now?
Was I seriously thinking this? I’M MORE HUMAN THAN VAMPIRE! I can’t eat my own kind! I’m not a cannibal.
But I was a monster...
Taking in a deep breath of the scent, I opened the door.
I walked slowly over to the laundry basket, and dug out the shirt from the bottom of the pile. Inhaling I held it to my face.
CLIFFY!!!
Do you hate me yet?
